The next election will held after the Premier of the Yukon Territory asks for a dissolution of parliament. While an election can be held at any time, an election must take place by next year.

Changes

  • Haakon Arntzen leaves the Yukon Party caucus after investigations into several sexual assualt cases in the 70's and the 80's began. While serving as an independent, he was found guilty. The Opposition called for his resignation, however this was rebuffed by the Government who believed he should be sentenced first.
  • The Liberal party held a leadership race after Pat Duncan had a disastrous result in the previous election. The party chose Arthur Mitchell over Duncan to lead the party.
  • Arntzen resigns from the legislature on September 9, 2005. The Premier stated that a by-election would be held as soon as possible.
  • The Copperbelt by-election was held November 21. Liberal leader Arthur Mitchell won the election with almost 50% of the vote.
  • Jenkins, member for Klondike, resigns from Yukon Party, November 28, 2005.

After the resignation of the only Independent member, a by-election was called for November 21. The seating was important strategically for all parties because each had something at stake. The Liberals needed the seat in order to elect the new leader, Arthur Mitchell. The NDP, who seems to be set to form the next government (according to most opinion polls), would need the riding in hopes of winning a majority government. The Yukon Party need to dispell negativity toward the government by proving that they could still win this riding. After the vote, Liberal leader Arthur Mitchell won the riding, increasing the number of Liberals in the legislature to two.

Peter Jenkins

Peter Jenkins, member for Klondike, resigned from cabinet on 28 November, 2005, and also from the caucus of the Yukon Party to sit as an independent. With the pending swear-in of Mr. Mitchell later in the day, it reduces the government majority to just two seats.

The resignation is related to an ultimatum by the premier to Mr. Jenkins in relation to a debt of over $300,000 owed by Jenkins' hotel to the government, on which no payments have been made for many years.
