The Dragon Ball Z movies are movies made based on the manga Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z, and the anime Dragon Ball Z.

The movies are often considered as "what if" scenarios to the anime and manga series by many fans of the Dragon Ball franchise, since all but one of them cannot fit into the continuity of the show. The elements and status of the characters indicate where they take place on the Dragonball timeline, but in each case one the characters would be occupied doing something else.

All Dragon Ball Z movies were originally released in Japan. Some of the movies have been released in the United States; the American version of each movie is edited by FUNimation, and is usually released under a different title.

Controversy and plot holes

As the Dragon Ball Z movies are not canon, there are many inconsistencies with the actual plot of the series. While each movie has its own issues, these are among the most troublesome:

  • Movie 1 has Kuririn not being surprised by Son Gohan's existence, insinuating that he knew about him. In the Dragon Ball manga and the Dragon Ball Z TV series, Kuririn meets Gohan for the first time only hours before Son Goku is killed by Piccolo in order to defeat Raditz. Since Goku is in this movie searching for Gohan, then chronologically this movie could not have existed in the context of the TV series.
  • Movie 8 states that Broli and Goku were born on the same day, and that Broli is the Legendary Super Saiyan. In the Dragon Ball Z anime, Vegeta states that there has not been a Legendary Super Saiyan for 1,000 years. However, the "legendary" nature of Super Saiyans does not seem to stand once Vegeta and others achieve the transformation, so this is debatable at best. The opposing argument being that since King Vegeta ordered Brolly killed the day he was born and years before he turned Super Saiyan, thus Vegeta never knew about him.
  • In Movie 13, Tapion gives Chibi Trunks a sword. This is intended to explain the origin of Future Trunks's sword. However, this is not possible unless Tapion and the events in movie 13 also happened in Future Trunks's timeline. Despite the conflict between timelines, the sword given by Tapion is apparently the same one that Chibi Trunks (then in his 20s) uses in Dragon Ball GT.

Movies

Movie 1

Japanese title: "Return My Gohan"
FUNimation title: "The Dead Zone"

  • Garlic Jr - A being who escaped from the Dead Zone, and is trying to collect the Dragonballs.
    • Garlic Jr tries to collect the dragonballs so he can wish for eternal life. He eventually collects all the dragonballs, and gets the last one from on top of Gohan's hat, so he kidnaps Gohan. So Goku goes after Gohan to rescue him. When he gets to Garlic Jr's "lair", he is met with three of Garlic Jr's henchmen. He fights them for awhile, and then Piccolo shows up and finishes them off. After that, Goku and Piccolo fought Garlic Jr for while (at this point Garlic Jr had already wished for Eternal life from the Eternal Dragon) and then Garlic Jr. opens up the dead zone. Goku and Piccolo were almost sucked into the dead zone when Gohan came out. He got really upset and unleashed his hidden powers and knocked Garlic Jr back into the dead zone.

Note: Because this movie was followed up with Garlic Jr.'s appearance in the Garlic Jr. Saga of the anime, it stands the most chance of being canon to the anime. However, there are still timeline inconsistencies. Neither this movie nor that saga of the anime are considered canon to the Dragon Ball manga.

Movie 2
