Claude Vivier (b. Montreal, April 14 1948, d. Paris, March 12 1983) was a Canadian composer. A student of Stockhausen in the early 1970s, Vivier's music shows, with its basis in cyclic melody, the distinct influence of Stockhausen's technique of formula composition. Another profound influence was the music of the East, and in particular Balinese music. In March 1983, Vivier, who was gay, was stabbed to death by a man he met in a bar.
