Baastian (Bas) de Gaay Fortman (born November 6 1937) is the Chair in Political Economy of Human Rights in the Netherlands. He is a member of the de Gaay Fortman famliy, the son of W.F. de Gaay Fortman, also a prominent Dutch politician.

==Political Career==
During the the late 1960s and 1970s Bas de Gaay Fortman firmly established himself as the idealistic jugernaut on the Dutch political landscape. Dr. de Gaay Fortman was originally a member of the Anti-Revolutionary Pary (ARP). In 1967 he left the ARP, disagreeing with their acceptance of a coalition with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and joined the Radical Party (PPR). Bas de Gaay Fortman was elected in 1971 as a Member of Parliament (in the Second Chamber of the States General) for the Radical Party (PPR), which he served as until 1977. From 1972-1977, he served as the elected leader of the Radical Party, during which time the radical party gained two ministerial positions through a strong showing in the elections. In 1977, he was appointed to the First Chamber of the States-General as Senator and Floor Leader for the Radical Party (PPR), where he remained until 1991. His father, W.F. de Gaay Fortman, was the Minister of Home Affairs in the Dutch government from 1973-1977.
Research Positions
Bas de Gaay Fortman has held numerous research positions. From 1991 to 1993 he was the director of research for the Institute for Social Studies (ISS). In 1992 he served as the chair of the Joint Steering Committee of the Netherlands Israeli Palestinian Research Programme (NIRP). From 1992 to 1998 he was a research in Convenor State-Society relations ISS and core researcher in both the CERES Research School (Development Studies) and the Netherlands Research School on Human Rights. From 1992 to 1993 he was the chair of the Directorate of the CERES School of Excellence in which six Dutch universities participated. From 2000 to today he is the chair of Working Programme Formation and Disintegration of States of the Netherlands Research School for Development Studies (CERES)

Current Position
Bastiaan de Gaay Fortman joined the Insitute of Social Studies in 1972 as Professor Extraordinary of Economic Development. From 1977 to 2002 he has held the ISS Chair in Political Economy. Dr. de Gaay Fortman is currently the Chair in Political Economy of Human Rights at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM). It can be added that he is the only chair in Political Economy of Human Rights in the world. He was also a Msgr Willy Onclin Professor of Comparative Canon Law at the Catholic University of Louvain in 2003/2004. Lastly, he is Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at the Institute of Social Studies (The Hague).
Until February 2005, he will be teaching his trademark class "Political Economy of Human Rights" to the Masters in Conflict Studies at Utrecht University. In this class, the majority of the readings utilized are his own works, yet unpublished.
His research interests include the political economy of law and jurisprudence (focus on political economy of human rights) and political economy of conflict and collective violence.
