New tribalists believe that human tribes fulfil an important role in governing and supporting human social behavior. They often seek to mimic indigenous peoples in organizing small groups of people from several families in stricter ways than the larger nation-state or culture requires.

One expression of this movement is the trend towards modern eco-villages.
