Format war

A format war describes competition between competing media formats, usually very costly to the format-owning parties involved.

Examples include the following:

  1. Videotape formats, VHS versus Betamax
  2. Recordable DVD formats, DVD+R versus DVD-R
  3. High-definition DVD formats, Blu-ray versus Advanced Optical Disc
  4. Digital video compression formats, Windows Media Video versus RealVideo versus DivX
  5. Digital audio compression formats, MP3 versus Ogg Vorbis versus Advanced Audio Coding versus Windows Media Audio
