Wikipedia:Requests for investigation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Sam Spade (talk | contribs) at 00:42, 12 May 2004. The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page helps responsible users prevent and respond to vandalism. List new vandals by IP or username. Please add new alerts at the top of the "Current alerts" list.

Two levels of urgency

If you want to alert everyone, leave the Wikipedia:Minor edit option unchecked. Be careful: this is the default. If the listing doesn't require an immediate response, please be sure to check the "minor edit" option.

Format

Use the format under the Current Alerts heading: IP address, pages touched, damage done. For a comprehensive guide for dealing with different types of vandalism, see Dealing with vandalism.

Blocks and other tools

For a list of blocked IPs and usernames and the reason why they were blocked, see Special:Ipblocklist. Tools for finding information on an IP number:

Adding someone to this page

When you notice what you think is an act of vandalism, note the vandal's IP number or handle. Edit this page, adding the person's IP number, and sign your edit with four tildes (~~~~) to give the date and time.

Then put the person's IP or handle in the Summary field and hit save.

Vandalism appears on Recent Changes, along with the id of the alleged vandal, and other wikipedians can decide whether damage has actually occurred. If there is consensus that an attack was correctly identified, everyone will help repair the damage. When the attack is finished, come back and remove the information you added.

If no attack occurred (e.g. it was just a difference of opinion about what is appropriate content or style, not intentional defacement), then the line will be removed from the vandalism in progress page. We hope cases of mistaken listing will be rare.

Please only use this page for genuine malicious vandalism, and only for a sustained attack. If you make any changes to this page for other reasons, put something like "Not calling a vandalism alert" in the summary box, or mark it as a minor edit.

Cautions and alternatives

However, please do not label isolated instances of text deletions, replacements or odd additions as VANDALISM unless they seem intentionally overly lewd or offensive. More often than not, this is just a visitor to the site experimenting (also see newbie test) -- labeling them as a VANDAL is a good way to ensure they don't become contributors. Only add alerts to this page of true VANDALISM such as a systematic attack on several articles. If you suspect an edit may be vandalism but are unsure, don't hesitate to list the edit on Wikipedia:RC patrol where it can be scrutinised by other editors. Above all, please be polite at first and give the person the benefit of the doubt until they prove they deserve otherwise.

If you need help or think someone else does, please leave a note at Wikipedia:clueless newbies.

Note that deliberate vandalism of this page is likely to lead to you being blocked from editing Wikipedia.

If you disagree with someone's edits, see the following pages instead:

Please add new alerts at the top of the "Current alerts" list.
When reporting anonymous vandals, please copy and use the template which is commented out between this line and ===Current alerts===.

GrazingshipIV

Is repeatedly deleting comments on Wikipedia:Requests for comment/GrazingshipIV. Sam Spade 00:40, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Has been involved in lengthy edit war on Janez Drnovsek, adding in material that has been fairly conclusively shown to be unnoteworthy. Consensus in the talk page is obviously against these edits, and user has been becoming increasingly abusive in his or her reverts. Furthermore, he or she has begun reverting useful edits along with edits that were simple reverts of his or her posts. Snowspinner 19:48, 11 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Wealth of Engrish articles being created. I'm tagging for speedily deletion as fast as I can, and I suggested that, if English is not his first language, he might be better served on a foreign language Wikipedia, but someone with more strength than a normal user could do better than I can. Not much to see at any one IP since they are being deleted quickly. This seems to be one or more users creating quick vandalism. I plan to block the IPs for a day or two if they continue. - Tεxτurε 16:38, 11 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

199.67.138.20

  • (User:199.67.138.20 | talk | contributions) - Looks to be a concerted nonsense-creating campaign, cutting & pasting text from job ads into new articles., 14 so far! --Stormie 06:20, May 11, 2004 (UTC)
    • 21 so far.. can someone block this idiot? --Stormie 06:26, May 11, 2004 (UTC)
      • I do not think ViP is the appropriate place for this - it's very likely that this is a naive new user. Until some more good faith efforts are made to contact the user, they should get the benefit of the doubt. Which does not mean that these articles shouldn't be listed for deletion - they should, and they should be listed en masse. But I'm not willing to call it vandalism yet - it could be naivete. Snowspinner 06:29, 11 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
        • Hmm, I think it is extremely unlikely that this is anything other than wilful vandalism OK, watching his further efforts, I am now willing to concede that this user may be naive (or insane), rather than an active vandal, but what "good faith" efforts can you make with an anonymous user who shows up and creates dozens of nonsense articles? You posted something on his talk page (far more politely than I would have I must say!), he has ignored it - I say block him and see if that makes him slow down and read your message. --Stormie 06:35, May 11, 2004 (UTC)

These IPs have been apparently used by the same person to make similar "corrections" into several pages related to Caucasian languages, e.g. Laz language, Svan language, Megrelian language, South Caucasian languages, Iberian-Caucasian languages, and Caucasian. According to all the sources I have seen the "corrections" are incorrect and misleading, apparently attempts to present a distorted view of the linguistic situation of the Caucasus for political purposes. This person also insist on adding (suspect) ethnic classification comments to articles that are strictly about language.
Unfortunately the person refuses to cite his sources or provide any comment or justification whatsoever.
It is very likely that the person is this user who withdrew from Wikipedia a few days ago after having become the subject of several complaints.

Update: User is back at work in the past few days. Still reverting existant pages to junk pages on Xena characters. Snowspinner 03:40, 6 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Long history of junk updates about characters who may be minor characters on Xena. Seems to overwrite legitimate mythological entries with them. Possible that updates are not even characters in Xena, but characters from an online RPG - see MediaWiki:VfD-Saraphine for discussion and evidence of this. Snowspinner 23:01, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • I agree...the user has even been contacted numerous times on his talk page, but has persisted without responding or adapting. Postdlf 3:26 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • Not just mythological entries. See the history of Shasta. RickK 03:36, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • I'll see if I can make an afternoon of reverting any entries by this user to older forms then. /sigh. And I'd so much rather be talking about Kant or videogames, too. Snowspinner 05:56, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • I've looked into this a bit further, and after a random sampling, I am reasonably convinced that few of the characters user has added are actually characters in Xena - I feel that all articles contributed by user ought be deleted. Snowspinner 16:02, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)
    • I agree with Snowspinner, except that care must be taken in deleting, to ensure that overwritten valid content is restored. Recent examples, where I restored the former contents, are Beth and Misery. In both cases I left in the Xena content but without trying to verify that the characters are "real" as opposed to coming from a Xena-themed RPG or fanfic. Deleting them all seems reasonable even if a few babies get tossed out with the bathwater. JamesMLane 06:53, 1 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

This guy (from Cornell according to nslookup) started out by making somewhat amusing and perhaps valid edits to Harvard University, e.g. changing "one of the most prestigious" to "one of the most pretentious", etc.. But now that he's been reverted a few times he's degenerated entirely into really childish vandalism and page blanking. Recommend blocking the IP username while allowing him to establish a real username from this IP, is such is possible. Otherwise recommend simply banning the IP, active immediately.

Should also add, he has attempted to make constructive changes to Cornell University, although only to enhance the existing article's account of Cornell's international academic standing. He also added useful info to the Ken Dryden article. --Chinasaur 11:44, Apr 22, 2004 (UTC)

YorubaMan (also see 209.151.129.82) has repeatedly fouled up entries related to Nigeria and the Yoruba with irrelevancies, grammatical errors and outright falsehoods - see for instance the entry for Oyo. In his comment on the edits he made to the Nigeria entry, he accused me of "lying" that "the Hausa/fulani are 2/3 population of Nigeria, It is not accurate infomation", a "lie" I clearly never committed. The Hausa/Fulani are indeed the largest ethnic group in Nigeria, going by the records of every census carried out in the country since the 1950s, and to claim that the Yoruba are the most numerous is a blatant falsehood. This person is obviously much less concerned with accuracy either in reading or in writing than he is with fouling Nigeria-related entries up with illiterate propaganda. Abiola Lapite 23:01, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

See YorubaMan's latest contribution at Talk:Nigeria for yet another example of what I'm going on about. Abiola Lapite 12:25, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

...24.101.118.78 seems to either be YorubaMan, or is at least working in concert with him, as he put back the changes to the Nigeria and Yoruba articles that I backed out. In addition, he's now fiddled with the Hausa-Fulani page, inserting the sentence Hausa fulani, are not educated, lazy people, who normal drink everyday, which is clearly vandalism by any measure. Abiola Lapite 10:00, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

...User:66.185.84.80, inserted the changes made by YorubaMan into the article on Nigeria, and graced his summary with extremely insulting references to my person in Yoruba (including calling me a bastard, a thief and a lunatic), along with the accusation that I'm "lying". Are all the administrators on Wikipedia on AWOL or something? Frankly, I'm getting tired of reverting petty vandalism and having nothing to show for my efforts but insulting remarks directed at my person. Abiola Lapite 11:22, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Non- or minor vandals

Talk:Artificial_consciousness I asked him an explanation of his behaviour on his talk page, but he didn't reply. Please someone remind him that other users should not be treated like that, Also he and Matt Stan recently started a parallel article synthetic consciousness It is not a Wikipedia policy to create parallel articles, but this is by far not the first time when they did that. They should delete the parallel article, continue to edit the artificial consciousness and respect the people there. Tkorrovi 16:35, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Tkorrovi has not read what Wikipedia considers to be vandalism. Tkorrovi is also a lying troll. He lies again here: I did not reply? Not only did I reply but I have his reply to that. Paul Beardsell 17:52, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that Tkorrovi has just added one of his favorite sentences back into the artificial consciousness (AC) article, namely, "It may be interpreted so that AC must be able to predict in all circumstances, but as this is impossible, then we can interpret it so that AC must be able to predict the external events in every possible environment when it is possible to predict for capable human." There has been discussion about how nonsensical this statement is (even when transliterated into good English), and I therefore do not construe it as vandalism to remove/amend/improve such statements as this in attempts to have the article make sense. Indeed it can be construed as vandalism to have added such a sentence to the article. I leave it to other readers to judge. What do you construe from Tkorrovi's sentence (above)? Do you think such a sentence adds to the excellence of wikipedia? The accusation of vandalism against Paul Beardsell can be answered by showing that he is only making attempts in good faith to undo the vandalism that he perceives is being done by Tkorrovi. Matt Stan 12:23, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the sentence again. Tkorrovi can find no scholar to support his view. Perhaps intelligibility has something to do with it. Paul Beardsell 14:59, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if you think that I try to advertise GGSearch on the wikipedia. I think it is not fair to the creator of the tool to not have this software in the Google list. You could add a third party list. I am using his software for two years now and that is why I typed it. The reason why I did it again, and again (four times if I am correct) was because I thought somebody was messing with the text. Now there is no reason to add anything else to the Google wiki because it is already complete. Sorry again for adding GGSearch to the Google wiki. To bad you don't use it yourself. That would open your eyes why I wanted to add it there. Sincerly John Mandel. Harlingen.

I did some tracking of this user. There's a pretty good case that this user is not just Lord Cornholio et al, but also at least twenty different IP addresses. The reason I have these suspicions is based on the fact that the IPs are often used to vandalize the same page: He gives each page 3 to 7 tries, and doesn't realize we're smarter than he is. Perhaps an AOL user? If my suspicions about him and his identities are correct, he's been vandalizing pages throughout the month of March, even up to today, and may (I say may, because I don't know) be the one launching attacks against RickK. Since User:Raptor made the above edit I guess Bird is creating more puppets? - Texture 21:58, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Bird seems to be mostly or totally blanking articles, most of which the user has contributed to extensively, or even exclusively. The big exception to this is the brain article. That was almost completely blanked with allegation of a copvio. I checked and the standard procedure for copyvios had not been followed which lead me to follow this up. I'd say bird requires watching over the next few days. David Newton 17:22, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

  • To get some context here, you might want to review Talk:Brain and also, User talk:Bird, before it was blanked, when I and Bird were having a discussion see this edit: [13]. It appears that our peer review standards were not high enough for Bird or something. Anyway s/he seemed to get bent out of shape about image formatting and decided to just leave. --Lexor|Talk 17:38, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Bird now appears to be going by the name of Accuracy dispute. Washington irving 19:56, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

It appears that User:bird has now recruited a sock puppet. User:Accuracy dispute has already undone some of the reversions that were made to articles earlier. We have to sort this out.
There are two separate problems I see. One is that we have to stop Bird and sock puppets blanking articles. The other is that we have to investigate whether the articles are indeed copyvios, and if they are, we need to delete them. I'm going to protect pages that Bird is messing with so that we can sort this out once and for all. David Newton 20:01, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Where can we continue discussion of these pages. I can help re images. and original content. Washington irving 20:04, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Sorry, but you are the vandals. User bird questioned the integrity of contributions under that byline, and several users decided they would rather have innaccurate articles that were not even recognized as valid by the author. User bird stubbed the articles so better informed writers can fill them in when they find time, between their important task of telling other writers what they should do.
A mob of vigilantees moved into the USER_talk:bird page to tell user bird what user birds problem was but of this cabal of very intelligent encyclopedia writers, not one has attempted to accurately articulate what were birds concerns, and in the rush to lynch a vandal, few cared that it was bird questioning the provinence of bird's contributions. This can go on forever or people can respect that others do thing they might not want them to do and accept the loss. That is the outcome of this: the user name bird is lost to this community and I will not repair it. If people want this to stop, they will start researching and contributing to articles and will not grab a rope and yell vandal when somebody else makes a severe edit on text they wrote but can't fully trust. Or, you can spread the false romour that bird created intentionally false articles meerly for the opportunity to the be victim of a lynch mob.

Adding material of dubious provenance surreptitiously, then announcing it to be a copyright violation without specifying enough to allow its clean removal and then creating confusion with sock puppet user-ids constitutes bannable behaviour in my opinion. Pretending to do so likewise. I suggest starting on the procedure for banning Bird in all its incarnations. -- The Anome 16:58, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

There was no serruptitious action. The material was added over the course of several weeks, there were comments added to the talk pages inviting criticism, such as the posting of a list of names of the cerebral hemispheres about which the user had honest doubts but attempted to make a good faith effor to identify. After the questionable identifications were on the talk page for two days, the user assumed them to be accepted by others who said they were watching, and placed them on the talk page. Further research led to further understanding about the regions, and more accurate identification and the user updated the caption to reflect accurate information.

When other users began to question aspects of the layout, users doubts further increased, and the user began reverting text about which user had doubts. If this is a project that ejects members who continue to question their writing after it is completed, or who do not allow other members to rest their confidence in content on the identity of an author, then that arbitration committee probably better just arbitrate, because that is the only standard at play - one which is arbitrary and capricious.

The user claims the user was hazed. There have been reports that new identities introduced in this environment were treated with either hazing or warm encouragement depending largely on political affiliation and acquiescence to acts of group agression. User:Your_Love_Is_Hollow

I did a temp-ban, as there have been suggestions that (a) this is a previously banned user and/or (b) it's a case of "rampage". I invite the Arbitration Committee to review my action. --Uncle Ed 19:13, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

137.94.11.222 / 205.189.49.40

is consistently vandalising Indian independence movement and Subash Chandra Bose with his PoV. The user seems to be ignorant of the usage of his/the article's talk page, and never reads the edit summaries. He has not responded to any request to consider rephrasing or properly substantiating his claims.

He sometimes blanks the article page to post his comments and has consistently in the past used (and has been warned for using) copyrighted material for presenting his case. A case in point is his repeated insistence in adding Swami Vivekananda to the list of Indian freedom leaders, and his blanking the contents of Subash Chandra Bose in the past (Without any substantial evidence, that would at least make it a NPOV dispute and could be dealt with)

There seems to be no way we can communicate to this user and reach a compromise. The user has not made any other worthwhile contribution to wikipedia. I advocate banning this user's IP address. chance 09:15, Dec 3, 2003 (UTC)

He may not be a vandal who believes in blitzkrieg attacks, but as can be seen from his yesterday's edit in the Indian independence movement page he is madly persistent - saying the same things all over again, and my, what a nauseating plagiarist he is! This fellow cannot even bring himself up to defend what he says, with a few words of his own. I am sick of this attitude. I bet he is waiting for us to tire of him, and let him do all he wants, however stupid that may sound. If this is not persistent vandalism, what is? Something has to be done about this. Maybe a protection request for the pages, and not allow others edit? To protect the articles from one single person? chance 08:44, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)
        • 137's contribution for 9th Dec was the vandalising of Mahatma Gandhi. Protection of pages won't help as there's no dearth of articles for him to play with. Maybe ban the two IPs and check if he comes up with new ones. Jay 09:12, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • The requests of non-anonymous users who have clearly been investing a lot of time undoing the damage of an anonymous user should be honored as soon as possible. Peak 08:48, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • 137's at it again (on Indian independence movement! Grrrr. The 137.* address is registered to Royal Military College, Ontario, so we'll have to keep an eye out for Good Guys who get banned too. The other address is an ISP. Could someone please block this guy? Gaurav 17:47, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)
      • And.... (Is it me who is getting annoyingly repetitive :-) ? )... again on Dec 12 in the articles, Indian independence movement and Swami Vivekananda. Seriously, when does a user get banned? How more serious should it be than this? One user who has done nothing to wikipedia for the last one month, except defacing the same set of articles still lurks around, quite freely. I would appreciate if some sysop takes note of this and suggest what should be done. It has been nearly two weeks, and nobody seems willing to check this user :-( chance 05:22, Dec 15, 2003 (UTC)

137.94.11.222 has been blocked. --mav 05:36, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

No longer blocked and he is back with his antics again in Indian independence movement. Has he been removed from Blocked IPs? I dont see the IP there. chance 04:55, Dec 19, 2003 (UTC)
137.94.11.222 is still at it. Hadal 20:22, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)
137.94.11.222 still vandalizing Wikipedia as of 9 Feb 2004. Ban his IP, at least. Connelly 08:10, 18 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Repeated Vandalism by 12.64.etc/12.65.etc

Over a long period of time several hoaxes have been added to Wikipedia from these IP ranges. Many of these hoax articles seem perfectly reasonable at first glance, often mixing facts in with the fiction. One of their favorite targets seems to be LeAnn Rimes. Some have been in concert with User:199.248.201.253. I am not sure if they are from the same user, but they appear to be. Examples (very incomplete):

I am posting it here so that hopefully more people will see this. --Maximus Rex 08:17, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Someone needs to put this entire class C network on permanent ban. Repeated vandalism, all the same style, also many deleted pages that were hoaxes. First, the IPs that have histories (I checked every IP on the subnet). Daniel Quinlan 20:45, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)

add to the mix these pages which are deleted (or not, someone is restoring them against policy to delete obvious vandalism)
