Translations into Spanish Wikipedia

I'm not familiar with the Spanish language, but I think the Spanish Wikipedia is here http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portada - Here's what I suggest:

  1. Make a username on the Spanish Wikipedia called "Cosmic girl"
  2. Visit articles on English Wikipedia that interest you
  3. In these articles, look to the left...see if there is a link to Spanish Wikipedia from there. If not, then add "interwiki links" to them, and start the translation!

Interwiki links are to the left. Take a look at Spanish language - if you edit this page and scroll to the very bottom, you should see something that looks like es:Idioma español.

I have not done much language translation, but maybe these links will help:

I hope this helps! --HappyCamper 18:57, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

Haha, I wouldn't call myself a "physicist" just yet. I haven't even taken any hard classes. Working on it though... Feel free to ask me questions anyway. Hablas español? Yo hablo un poco solamente, pero me gusta practicar y mejorar. Did that make sense? =P Well, ttyl I guess... And welcome to Wikipedia! —Keenan Pepper 17:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cosmicity

We cosmic ones like to talk teologia, filosofia y ciencia. Tell me what articles you intend to write or which you liked to read. --Harvestman 21:38, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi! Well... I don't think I have enough knowledge of wikipedia to write any article shamefully, I can barely edit this page.lol,I like to read philosphy, science and theology articles.--Cosmic girl 21:43, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ps.where are you from by the way?

since you asked, I stated that on my page. Just click, no harm.

Sincere questions

Hi, cosmic girl. Your questions on the Humanities reference desk are very sincere, but there is too much for readers/responders to process at one time. You might get better results if you try to ask one question at a time. Halcatalyst 23:13, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you are right... thnx :) --Cosmic girl 23:21, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your welcome. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 17:19, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Attention

Hello, I noticed you left a message on my talk page, to which I responded. I'd like you take the time to acknowledge the below though, before you continue your little rampage of 12-year old AOLer attitude.

Wikipedia is NOT:
  • An internet forum. The primary goal is not to go around talking to people.
  • Your personal instant messenger. I personally don't want to talk to you unless you give me a valid reason to.
  • Your pager. If you can afford a secretary or private tutor. Good for you. But why the FUCK are you asking people to talk to you about agnosticism when you can use wikipedia and just look up agnosticism?
  • Somewhere where time matters. There's no rush, it'll still be there. Is it REALLY that hard to type out words completely and make sure that there aren't (too many) spelling mistakes. Typing the way you currently are is a pain to read, and it's very rude to your intended audience.
So if you want shape up your act, then perhaps we can talk. Otherwise, don't bother. I'm busy. Edward Grefenstette 18:28, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow... u r a really nice person! Someone told me I could look for a philosopher here to ask him/her for some advice, and I never intended to talk about agnosticism I just pointed out that I was an agnostic. As for the spelling mistakes, I'm really sorry, but I try my best since english is not my first language nor I live in an english speaking country. I am aware that the primary goal of wikipedia isn't to go around talking to people and I don't do that, like I said before, I just looked for a philosopher because I don't know any where I live (because where I live there are no colleges with philosophy majors)and It turned out that I stumbled across a very grumpy philospher, but take no offense in that, since I don't mean it personally, I'm just pointing it out. I have an instant messenger but I'm also aware that email adresses can't be posted here. whatever kid, you seemed nice but I have confirmed now that intuition can be deceiving. --Cosmic girl 18:48, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't normally get involved in other people's conversations/arguments, but I think you were just a little bit harsh there Edward Grefenstette...would it not be much easier, and more polite to answer with "no thanks"? (And also being more in line with no personal attacks as well.) Mushintalk 14:01, 16 January 2006 (UTC) ps. and as a Sheffield inhabitant, I expect better :)[reply]

Thank you Mushin! :D --Cosmic girl 16:59, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all :) Mushintalk 15:27, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity

I have been thinking about you since you started asking all your questions at the reference desk. It might become possible for there to be a new project called Wikiversity that would provide a wiki for people who really want to learn and explore. After I saw your neurology question today, I clicked on you user name and soon found myself reading the comment from Edward Grefenstette (above). The reference desk is a Wikipedia feature that can help people discover how to use this online encyclopedia, help people find information that is hidden on obscure pages or help Wikipedians discover gaps in the content of Wikipedia. In short, the reference desk is not really designed with you in mind. I think you should keep asking questions, but be prepared for those people who will not be interested in helping you. If you have time, you might want to help contribute to the Wikiversity project. --JWSchmidt 19:52, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thank u, I would love to, how can I help? I don't know much, (indeed I know very little) about how wikipedia is eddited, so I can help with anything if I have the information about the steps I need to follow. I also would love to translate articles from english to spanish or anything that someone needs me to help translate, but I don't understand the procedure. ( I read the page about translating but I was frustrated because I didn't understand it). --Cosmic girl 19:58, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the m:Translation page that you previously saw? I see that it has some links to pages like this. I know nothing about translations, but it seems like there are others who are actively involved in translation efforts. As for Wikiversity, I have long thought that there should be a Wikiversity feature that is similar to the Wikipedia reference desk. I have imagined a place to ask questions after the question asker has already read the relevant Wikipedia articles and could not get a good answer at the Wikipedia reference desk. In my view, Wikiversity should become a wiki that is specialized for learning and study projects and research efforts. Each question asked could be the start of a new Wikiversity article and a new exploration of a topic. I have a real problem naming things. We need a good name for the Wikiversity "reference desk". --JWSchmidt 20:31, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You should talk to User:Jmabel about translation. He is the one who started the project. He's almost fluent in Spanish and knows some of a bunch of other languages. Nice guy, too. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 07:48, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is "me"? Is it all matter or do I have a "soul"?

Imagine there are two universes identical in every way except in one only matter exists (no "souls" radio-like comunicating to brains) and the other one HAS "souls".

  1. If there is no POSSIBLE experiment that could be done to decide which universe YOU are in then the difference is semantic, not real (see logical positivism).
  2. If there IS an experiment that could tell the difference, but there is no current practical way to run that experiment, then the difference between the two universes in some senses doesn't make a difference.
  3. If you can and do run the experiment, then you have evidence of which of the two universes you have tested between exists, but not which among all concievable universes exist.
  4. And finally, it may just be that the real universe is stranger than we CAN concieve. Cheers. WAS 4.250 06:26, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I only understood number 4 and I agree, but that doesn't mean we should give up in any sense. --Cosmic girl 18:36, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1a.It is "only semantics" when you are confusing talk about reality with talk about the meanings of words. Semantics is distinguished from ontology (study of existence) in being about the use of a word more than the nature of the entity referenced by the word. This is reflected in the argument, "That's only semantics," when someone tries to draw conclusions about what is true about the world based on what is true about a word. Sometimes talk about "soul" and "spirit" is talk about how we use those words rather than talk about the actual nature of reality. WAS 4.250 19:15, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1b.Sometimes talk about "soul" and "spirit" has no actual real content; it is just putting a lot of words together in a way that when analyzed for actual real world consequences doesn't actually mean anything. In the early twentieth century, the logical positivists put forth what came to be known as the verifiability theory of meaning. The verifiability theory was based upon the verifiability principle, which states "The statement is literally meaningful (it expresses a proposition) if and only if it is either analytic or empirically verifiable." The meaning is based on the test used to verify the validity.WAS 4.250 19:15, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2.Sometimes talk about "soul" or "spirit" versus "just matter" comes down to pointlessly minor differences to the extent that the differences don't make a difference. WAS 4.250 19:15, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Reference desk and asking questions

I just saw the full exchange between you and Edward. Please ignore him. I'm not really sure where I stand on that particular topic, so I guess I'm agnostic by default rather than conviction. Feel free to bounce ideas off of me. If you see this diff before seeing my note above, look up two sections. The WP:RD should be used for asking any questions on any topic you want. If people don't want to answer them, they don't have to. That said, please avoid the "why columbus set sail" type questions. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 08:08, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you:D. hey, why do you think Bush is a puppet? hahaha! --Cosmic girl 18:35, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with WAvegetarian comments, and think asking questions at the references desk is fine, so long as it isn't easily answered by just reading a WikiPedia entry. And I don't think your questions fall into that category, from what I've read. As for your spelling, it seems good enough for me to get your meaning. I generally only offer corrections when the person has repeatedly misspelled a word the same way, indicating it's not just a typo. However, people who don't even take the effort to try to spell correctly, capitalize, or use sentences do rather annoy me. That might be fine for IM but not here. StuRat 13:21, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is your country secret ?

I am guessing you are afraid people will react negatively toward you if they know what country you are from. I don't think many South American countries suffer from strong hatred against them, however. I'm from the USA, and state so, and do have quite a bit of anger directed toward me as a result, but that's OK, I can defend myself. StuRat 13:32, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi StuRat! :D first of all, thank you for being such a nice person and taking time to answer my questions or comment on them positively. I don't say which country I am from because I don't know I guess my personality is really outlined and described in what I say about myself and I guess that if say which country I am from everyone will guess who I am (specially a stalker I have, he knows I like wikipedia and he would guess right away it is me, specially because of the question about croatian I posted on the language section), but anyway, I guess that's just a slight probalility (let's hope) so... whatever, I'm from Peru. haha. :P the thing is that this guy is on wikipedia all the time and he may chek out the questions on the reference desk quite often so if he by any chance sees my user page he will immediately know it's me, and he is an annoying peson in real life whom I try to avoid and he would find out a lot about me ..so, but whatever.--Cosmic girl 16:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that makes sense. If he finds you, you can always change your screen name, but I think it's better to just ignore him. You can erase any comments he leaves here and ignore comments he makes elsewhere. StuRat 23:57, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's why I erased my profile. Hey StuRat, how old are you? I guess there isn't an average age of wikipedia users is there? (I'm 20 by the way :D )--Cosmic girl 01:36, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm 39. I try to treat people the same regardless of age (but not regardless of maturity, which I don't link with age). StuRat 06:49, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just happened to drop in after reading some of your RD questions. See this for a self-included list by birthyear. There are lots of other categories as well. hydnjo talk 03:02, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cosmic. Regarding the Popper quote, I'm glad you like it and I thought it ideal for a place like Wiki. I think of it partially as an antidote to "the sum total of human knowledge" quote from Jimbo that many people post on their pages. While it's a nice sentiment, "the sum total of human knowledge" is also a vanishing point, not a place at which we will finally arrive. Popper I think reminds us of this.

Regarding misunderstanding my argument at the ref desk, I should apologize: "counter-intuitive 'exclusivity parameters'" was confusing as hell. I only meant that "if Universals, then reality is subjective" struck me as a contradictory suggestion. If Universals exist, would we not say instead that reality has objective content?

As for "how old are you?" I'm in my 20s. I generally avoid info like this as it has little bearing on how I treat or am treated by other Wikipedians. And, while I could be dealing with a 20 year-old woman from Peru, I could also be dealing with a 50 year-old man from Pennsylvania ;). I'll assume the former in this case, and age is relatively harmless info anyhow. Non-article chit-chat is often best left to e-mail rather than an open forum like the Wiki and mine is enabled.
