Island platform

Epping is a CityRail railway station on Sydney's Main Northern railway line. It serves the suburb of Epping, a significant commercial and residential area. Epping is currently the western terminus of the Epping to Chatswood Line and so is undergoing reconstruction.

History

When the Great Northern Line opened on 17 September 1886, a single face platform known as Field of Mars was located on the western side of the line opposite Chester Street. The platform was renamed Carlingford in 1887.

The station was renamed Epping when it opened in its current location on 7 October 1899. The opportunity was taken to build it as an island platform.

Later, a terminating platform was added. This terminating platform had three unusual features

  • it was located in the centre of the island platform.
  • the centre terminating track had a platform face on either side.
  • the centre track later on had one platform face fenced off.
