Beaches—East York (formerly Beaches—Woodbine) is a federal and provincial electoral district in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the Canadian House of Commons since 1988, and in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1967.

The riding combines two notable city neighbourhoods: the Beaches and part of the former borough of East York. This political boundary is an area used for both provincial and federal representation; municipally it is divided into two halves, with a councillor for the Beaches (Ward 32) in the south, and one for East York (Ward 31) to the north.

On Toronto city council, the riding is currently held by councillor Janet Davis in Ward 31 and deputy mayor Sandra Bussin in Ward 32.

Both provincially and federally, the riding has been historically a political stronghold for the New Democratic Party (NDP). Despite this, the riding has been held federally by a Liberal member and former cabinet minister, Maria Minna, since the 1993 election. In the 2004 election, Minna beat NDP candidate and former head of Greenpeace, Peter Tabuns by more than 7,000 votes, to keep her seat. Jim Harris, leader of the federal Green Party, will run in this riding in the 2006 election.

The federal riding of Beaches—Woodbine was created before the 1988 federal election from Beaches riding. Before the 1997 federal election, it adopted its current name.

The provincial riding was known as Beaches—Woodbine from 1967 until the 1999 Ontario provincial election when it adopted the same name and borders as its federal counterpart. Prior to 1967 provincially and 1988 federally, the riding was known as Beaches.

Geography

Between 1986 and 1999, the provincial riding of Beaches—Woodbine consisted of that part of the former city of Toronto east of the following line: Coxwell Avenue south the Canadian National railway, CN railway west to Greenwood Avenue, Greeenwood Avenue south to Queen Street, Queen Street west to Leslie Street, and Leslie Street south to Lake Ontario. After 1999, the district had the same borders as the Beaches-East York federal riding.
