"Te Amo"
Song

"Te Amo" (English: "I Love You") is a song performed by R&B Barbadian singer Rihanna. It is written by Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, James Fauntleroy II and Rihanna and produced by Stargate. Lyrically the song speaks of a woman's struggles to deal with being the object of Rihanna's desires. It serves as the third international and fifth overall single from her fourth album Rated R.[2][3][4] It was performed live on May 22, 2010, at the BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Music Festival.[5]

Critical reception

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy awarded the song four out of five stars stating that "After the rather explicit 'Rude Boy' campaign, Rihanna's taking a well-deserved break from titillating the blokes here - only to find herself the object of another lady's affections. One of her Rated R LP's less menacing moments, 'Te Amo' finds La Fenty grappling with her sexuality over some irresistible, latin-infused Stargate beats."[6] Fraser McAlpine of Daily Reviews also awarded the song four out of five stars and stated "It’s that old, old story: Girl meets girl. Girl speaks different language to girl. Girl loves girl. Girl doesn’t love girl. Girl sad. We’ve all been there, right? And Rihanna’s captured that feeling beautifully (she actually has, even though I sound incredibly insincere about it)."[7]

Chart performance

In December 2009, "Te Amo" made its first chart appearance on the Swedish Singles Chart at number fifty-two shortly after Rated R was released. Upon announcement as a single the song debuted on the UK Singles Chart on April 19, 2010 at number ninety-four and number twenty-nine on the UK R&B Chart. Since then it has peaked at number fourteen on the UK Singles Chart and number five on the R&B chart. In Australia it debuted at number 35 in Australia and has since peaked at 28 meanwhile in Ireland it debuted at 41 in the week ending May 27, 2010. It also debuted number 47 on the Swiss Singles Chart and has since jumpecd twenty-three places to number 24. On the European Hot 100 it debuted at 48 for the week of May 29, 2010 and has since peaked at 19. It made its debut on the Canadian Hot 100 for the week ending July 3, 2010 at number 98. The next week it jumped to 72.

Music video

The video was shot on April 29, 2010 and April 30, 2010 in Vigny, France[8] in the Château de Vigny. On the set, photos show Rihanna in a colourful floral maxi dress and a black lacy basque. French supermodel, Laetitia Casta plays a femme fatale in the video.[9] The video premiered on May 28, 2010.[10] According to Billboard's music video writer, Monica Herrera, "Rihanna saved a far sexier clip [than 'Rockstar 101'] for fans abroad" She described the videos various scenes as "Rihanna get[ting] frisky in a bedroom and set[ting] a fire with a sultry female companion."[11]
