Wikipedia:Requested moves
Requested moves is the place to request and vote on article moves that are not straightforward, or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. Normally, logged in users can do uncontroversial moves themselves using the [move] tab found at the top of every page (see Help:Moving a page for more information). However, sometimes this does not work because the target is already occupied (usually in the form of a redirect with a page history). In other situations a move may be controversial and will require discussion to reach a consensus.
Approval voting is encouraged for page moves requested on this page. Requested moves may be implemented if there is a Wikipedia community consensus (generally 60% or more) supporting the moving of an article after five (5) days under discussion on the talk page of the article to be moved, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator. The time for discussion may be extended if a consensus has not emerged.
What requested moves is not for
Before you begin note that requested moves is only for moving articles and sometimes templates. It is not the place for the following:
- Unobstructed, uncontroversial moves
- Moves of this nature can be accomplished by any logged in user using the [move] tab located at the top of every page. See Help:Moving a page.
- Category move requests
- To rename a category, list it at categories for deletion (yes, deletion).
- Image move requests
- To rename an image, reupload the image with the name you want, change the relevent links to reflect the new name, then list the old image at images and media for deletion.
- Merge requests
- To merge two articles, make a request at proposed mergers or be bold and do it yourself.
- Cut and paste move fix requests
- To request page histories to be merged, list them at cut and paste move repairs.
Steps for requesting a page move
(replace PageName with the name of the page to be moved and NewName with your proposed name)
I. | Add the request to the
list on this page To aid the administrators, add a line with the day's date on it directly under the heading of the Current discussions subsection, if it has not already been added for this day. Today is October 24, 2024.
To enter a request for a single page to be moved to a new name, add a line at the top of the section under the date line:
A handy way to do this is to write the following on an empty line:
which will include all the necessary formatting (do not forget the "subst:"). For more complicated requests see #Multiple page moves for formatting suggestions. Include the page's name in your edit summary. Save this page. |
II. | Add the move template to talk page.
Enter the following text at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved:
If you want a page to be moved, but don't yet know what name it should be given, you can use {{moveoptions}} instead to indicate that there are several options to discuss. |
III. | Create a place for discussion
If one does not already exist, create a section on the talk page of the page you want moved for discussion. This can take any form that is reasonable for administrators to follow, but copying the following is suggested: ==Requested move== ===Voting=== ===Discussion=== If you are proposing that multiple closely related pages should all be moved for the same reason (see #Multiple page moves), it may be advisable to create this discussion on only a single talk page and provide links from the other talk pages to this centralized discussion. Please include "move proposal" or similar in the edit summary and don't mark it as minor. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. Save the page. |
What to do on the article page
If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial, for example, it is correcting spelling or capitalisation, update the article reflecting the title it should have (for example, the article is at My Dog but should be at My dog, change the opening sentence to '''My dog''' is furry.). The template CapitalMove is also available, see Category:Requested capitalization moves.
Current discussions
Please list new requests at the top of today's section (October 24) in the format described above. Actual discussions should take place on the listed talk page, not here.
- John Nicholls (footballer) - John Nicholls - Someone added a non-notable bishop to the disambig page, and it's all ruined.
- Talk:My Bloody Valentine — My Bloody Valentine → My Bloody Valentine (band) – The page needs to be moved, because you can't access the film from the music group site. Many people will probably want to do this, being curious as to what the film is all about and why the music group chose it for their name. Also, I have already created a disambiguation page for this purpose, as soon as it is moved. See: My Bloody Valentine (disambiguation) Matthew 00:33, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Talk:Never-nude – Never-nude → Never Nude – I think that the page should be renamed to "Never Nude" because the Never Nude website created by FOX uses that punctuation and capitalization. I don't think this is controversial but I am a new user and cannot move it. — TuesdayMush 00:25, 30 January 2006 (UTC)It's been moved. There was nothing preventing it. - Someguy0830 00:35, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- Talk:Rebate — Rebate → Rebate (marketing) – Was moved from Rebate (marketing) to Rebate overwriting the Rebate disambig page based on the assumption that the other definition of Rebate (see Rabbet) was not valid. SilentC 23:45, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- Talk:Kafir (Islam) — Kafir (Islam) → Kafir – This article was recently moved from the Kafir article page without any group discussion. As mentioned by two people on Talk:Kafir (Islam), the move was not necessary. It was originally done to differentiate between 'kafir' and other articles which use the word 'kaffir', not 'kafir'. However, it would probably be best to leave the Kafir (Islam) article at Kafir and reference the Kaffir page in the unlikely event the reader was looking for Kaffir instead. joturner 23:14, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

- Talk:Nectar source — Nectar source → Nectar – Nectar, the sweet plant liquid, is the overwhelming main use of nectar, so I moved Nectar to Nectar (disambiguation). However, there is no article about nectar, except nectar source. But sources of nectar should really be a section within a broader article on nectar, so I have started modifying nectar source in this light, and everything should make sense once it is moved to nectar. jiy (talk) 21:41, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Nectar source is a technical term used in horticulture and agriculture, and has a more specific meaning than "nectar". Improving the nectar page is a good idea, but there are already links made to nectar source, having to do with beekeeping, ecological pest control, etc. SB Johnny 11:16, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Ok, this one is a mess. Gediminas, Duke of Lithuania was moved to Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania. However, the talk page was not moved. So now Talk:Gediminas, Duke of Lithuania contains the move discussion, and Talk:Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania is a redirect to... itself. Can you please clean up this mess by moving the talk? Renata 18:24, 28 January 2006 (UTC)Nevermind. It got too complicated over just a few edits. It would require to merge histories of two talk pages. - Talk:Mesopotamian mythology — Assyro-Babylonian mythology → Mesopotamian mythology – Better name all around. Someone tried to move it by copying the content, but it must be done this way instead to preserve the history. —Keenan Pepper 00:37, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- I heartily agree with Keenan. Mesopotamian mythology was the original name (its talk pages have been lost due to the Wikibug), but was moved on January 13 (see history in Assyro-Babylonian mythology) without discussion or explanation by User:Sargonious, who tagged the move as a minor edit. I put a comment in the article's Talk criticizing the move, but the user never replied. By the way, it was I who temporarily restored the original page by cutting and pasting when moving it failed. So, this here is the only way to move it back to the way it was for quite a long time, and thus the consensus. Castanea dentata 17:30, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

- Talk:Real Sociedad Canina en España — Real Sociedad Canina en España → ??? – To reach a consensus on the Kennel Club naming systems. Per Wikipedia naming conventions "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." A sub guideline of that is "Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form." However, since the Kennel Club is an international organization, there is some dissent on how the matter should be handled. Esprit15d 21:46, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Talk:La Femme Nikita (series) — La Femme Nikita (series) → Nikita (TV series) – Original name of series in its producing country was Nikita; the other title was later used for US rebroadcasts, syndication, and DVD release. - Talk:Stegomyia aegypti — Stegomyia aegypti → Aedes aegypti – As another wikipedian has explained on the talk page, the reclassification of this mosquito as Stegomyia aegypti has not been widely accepted by the scientific community. Until this has been resolved, I think the article should keep the mosquito's current and accepted name, Aedes aegypti. I've prepared a revised copy of the article to be posted if the article is moved back to Aedes aegypti. --Barefootmatt 19:33, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Talk:Uusimaa (region) — Uusimaa (region) → Uusimaa – Currently there are two disambiguation pages for Uusimaa: Uusimaa and Uusimaa (disambiguation). This can be very confusing, since most of the people who type "Uusimaa" want to go straight to the article which is currently under the name Uusimaa (region). I suggest Uusimaa (region) is moved to its proper article, which is Uusimaa, and which will leave Uusimaa (disambiguation) as the sole disambiguation page. Besides, the straight equivalent of Uusimaa (region) in the Finnish Wikipedia is Uusimaa. [1] --Thorri 14:39, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Uusimaa (disambiguation) should be a redirect to Uusimaa, not the other way around. JIP | Talk 15:07, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- That's assuming all meanings are equally notable, of course. If the Uusimaa region is the most notable meaning then I agree with User:Thorri. JIP | Talk 15:09, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Well, the article Uusimaa (region) is the most important article of the bunch and should be under Uusimaa. As an example, "New York" is about the state of New York, while the article of the city of New York is not under the name "New York", even though it is equally important if not even more important since most people think about the city of New York when thinking about New York. What I'm trying to say is that the historical province of Uusimaa (actually known as Nylandia, not Uusimaa!) or Etelä-Suomi (Southern Finland, also not known as Uusimaa) are not more important than the actual article about the actual Uusimaa. I just wish people would understand that! --Thorri 10:43, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

- Talk:Crystal (glass) — Crystal (glass) → Lead crystal – Lead crystal is a redirect to Crystal (glass), but up until I merged them there were separate articles about the same thing at Lead glass and Crystal (glass). I feel that putting the article at Lead crystal will achieve the best of both of the titles of the merged articles. The meaning of Lead crystal is as clear as, well, "crystal" (hehe sorry I couldn't resist) and will be less ambiguous than Crystal but more useful than Lead glass. - Talk:Hilda Toledano - Hilda Toledano → Maria Pia de Saxe Coburg Braganza -
In the wiki article Maria Pia of Braganza, aka Hilda Toledano, is mentioned because she was daughter of the king Charles of Portugal and she was considered a pretender to Portuguese Crown. When she claimed this dynastic rights her name was Maria Pia Saxe Coburg Braganza. This name is riported in her baptizimal certification and also in all her offiacial certifications [[3]],[[4]]. In her youth she assumed the name Hilda Toledano, a pseudonym in a dictatorial salazarist period in Portugal because she was pursued in this dictatorial period but she fighted Salazar for the return of democracy in Portugal. So for politic reason she assumed the name Hilda Toledano. With this name she was also a writer and she wrote many books. The names and the story of this books you can find in this site, wrote by an important french hystoric *Maria Pia: The Pretender, part I; part II; part III: part IV; part V. Now her oppositors, the miguelist supporters, want hide the presence of her rights and mystify her story. Can you help me to give again the title "Maria Pia of Saxe Coburg Braganza" in her wiki page and change the name Hilda Toledano. The miguelist supporters(supporters of other portuguese pretender), in particular with a user Muriel@pt, have delete also the Rosario Poidimani page. Muriel has asked other her wiki-fiends to vote to delete this page. I think this people know nothing about Maria Pia but only for friendship with Muriel they have voted! Is this possible?? Please help me to reinsert the name Maria Pia Saxe Coburg Braganza in her wikipage and create the Rosario Poidimani page. Thankyou. M.deSousa 26 January 2006 (UTC)

- the word "The" should be removed from the Levellers page. -- ~~~~
Another example of how to request to move a block of pages:
- Talk:Third world -- First world to First World,
- Second world to Second World and
- Third world to Third World
- This was a move made earlier in the year as a block move, after listing on this page because all three were blocked by edits to the target pages -- ~~~~
