Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day

The Fête nationale du Québec is the official holiday of Quebec and Quebec culture. It falls on June 24, the feast of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of Quebec, and it is therefore more popularly called Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day despite the government's more secular term.

The celebrations often assume a Québécois nationalist tone; at more tense moments of Quebec history, it has even provoked violence. However, these days it is a cultural festival in which Quebecers of all ethnic backgrounds and political persuasions participate.
