Grey's Anatomy is an American primetime television medical drama. The pilot episode aired March 27, 2005. The show stars Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey, a surgical intern at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle, Washington. The plot concerns her and her fellow interns, their love lives and the struggles to handle their workloads. The title is a pun on Gray's Anatomy, a famous anatomy textbook. In 2005, ABC gave the show a vote of confidence by announcing that Grey's Anatomy would recieve the coveted post-superbowl slot.

Criticism and praise

Grey's Anatomy, despite its popularity, has not been without its fair share of detractors. The show has been widely criticized by various groups, many of which reside in the medical field, for inaccurately presenting medical situations and greatly exaggerating the degree to which doctors and medical professionals fraternize with one another. However, supporters of the show have defended its lack of realism, claiming that a more realistic show would lack the charms that make Grey's Anatomy so popular with such a wide audience. Supporters likewise claim that the purpose of the hospital setting is to provide a dramatic backdrop that allows for the characters to be put into emotionally and physically intense situations that would rarely materialize in other circumstances and settings. In this sense, Grey's Anatomy is similar to such other popular shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which used the larger-than-life scenarios (magic realism) of each episode to metaphorically express emotions that every person, no matter how mundane or fantastic his or her life may be, goes through.

Season 1

The first season of Grey's Anatomy was broadcast from March 2005 until May 2005. Although it only contained nine episodes, many significant events took place. Various situations included:

  • Meredith sleeps with Derek, not knowing at the time that he is one of the surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital.
  • Cristina and Preston start sleeping with each other, putting a strain on both of their personal and professional lives.
  • Meredith places her mother, once an excellent surgeon but now suffering from Alzheimer's disease, in a nursing home. Izzie and George move in with Meredith.
  • Alex discovers a magazine with provocative pictures of Izzie posing for a lingerie advertisement. He posts copies of the pictures all over the doctors' locker room, infuriating her.
  • Preston and Derek both learn that Dr. Webber promised them his position (chief surgeon) upon his retirement.
  • Izzie throws a party for her visiting boyfriend, only to have everything blow up in her face, including the breakup of the couple.
  • Miranda happens upon Meredith and Derek making out at the aforementioned party. She later explains to Derek that he will not play favorites to Meredith over the other interns. Meredith, caught in the middle, feels an overwhelming amount of pressure and abuse.
  • After a gay male patient hits on him, George has to convince the others that he is not a homosexual as many of his coworkers originally thought.
  • Meredith comes to terms with her mother's illness after she confides in a former nurse who worked with her mother at Seattle Grace.
  • Dr. Webber asks Derek to remove a tumor that was pressing on his optic nerve. However, he emphasizes that the surgery remain low-key, so that his position as chief surgeon will not be placed in jeopardy.
  • George has a date with a nurse, Olivia, and ends up sleeping with her. The next day, he realizes that he has contracted syphilis from her. After other various hospital staff contract syphilis, George learns that Olivia contracted the disease from Alex.
  • Cristina finds out that Preston Burke has gotten her pregnant. She contacts a doctor about having an abortion, but has second thoughts after encountering a pregnant patient. She does not tell Preston about the pregnancy. Later in season two, she collapses from an ectopic pregnancy during a surgery with Burke, and loses the baby.
  • Meredith and Derek's romantic relationship begins to grow stronger. In the season finale, however, Meredith learns that Derek is actually married. The details of Derek and his wife's marriage were left open, but were answered in the first few episodes of season two. Derek's wife, Addison, cheated on Derek with his best friend Mark, driving Derek to leave her, take his current job in Seattle, and eventually pursue a romance with Meredith.
