Gender identity disorder is a disorder in which a person who is one biological sex identifies psychologically with the other sex - i.e. belongs to the other gender. This feeling can arise in adolescence or even early childhood, and can result in severe identity crises until the person allows themself to live as the target gender.

Persons with gender identity disorder who have begun to live as the opposite gender ("cross-live") are referred to as transgendered or transsexual. The latter term is sometimes reserved for those who will receive or have received genital reassignment surgery (commonly called a "sex-change operation").
