Silverchair (originally called Innocent Criminals) is an Australian grunge band. Its members are Daniel Johns, Chris Joannu, and Ben Gilles.

Daniel Johns has also worked with paulmac in The Dissociatives and also had a fourth member, Tobin Finnane. The group met at Ben's garage to play covers of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and others. However, Tobin moved overseas, and the band became a trio.

After winning a demo-contest, with the song "Frogstomp" the band became big during the grunge hype in the early 1990s. Their first cd Frogstomp was made a very short time after Silverchair won the contest. After Frogstomp, skeptics called this album light-grunge, Silverchair released Freak Show. This album contains very dark songs, pretty heavy/grungy.. but did never became as big as Frogstomp.

The albums Neon Ballroom and Diorama are not very much like their first two albums. Neon Ballroom is a lot more than just a grunge album. The band started to sound more classical and fragile.
