Lazy Sunday is a music video starring Saturday Night Live cast members Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg that aired on the December 17, 2005, episode of the show.

The film, set in New York City, shows Parnell and Samberg performing a rap about buying cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery and going to see the movie The Chronicles of Narnia. It quickly became popular among Internet communities for its memorable one-liners.

While Parnell, an eight year veteran of SNL, was a well-established performer on the show (he had even rapped several times during segments on Weekend Update), Samberg, like most featured players, had made little impact before "Lazy Sunday", which proved to be a breakout for him.

Making of the film

Samberg's fellow members of The Lonely Island were involved in the making of the film, which is presented in widescreen. Akiva Schaffer directed the clip and Jorma Taccone created the musical beat. All three plus Parnell wrote the script on December 12, 2005. The music was recorded on December 13, and on December 15 the crew filmed the short in about five hours using the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in the Chelsea district of Manhattan as a stand-in for a movie theater and casting Taccone's girlfriend's sister as a convenience store clerk.

Samberg thought audiences would criticize its low budget style, cheesy lyrics, and product placements, but Internet prevalence and continued downloads suggest it is gaining popularity on par with "More Cowbell", a 2000 SNL skit starring Christopher Walken.

Trivia

The man who walks in front of Magnolia Bakery during the film is Donald Burns, one of the bakers at the famous bakery.

Several West Coast comedians produced "Lazy Monday" a rap battle-style response to "Lazy Sunday". In it, Mark Feuerstein, Sam Friedlander and Adam Stein go to a Color Me Mine make-your-own pottery shop and get some coffee.
