Mount Kerinchi is the highest mountain of Sumatra. It is located near the west coast, about 130 km (80 mi) south of Padang. The steep, pine-forested slopes of Kerinchi rise in isolation above surrounding farmland. Kerinchi last erupted in 1970, and continues to spew clouds of sulphurous smoke.
