The Washington Opera is an opera company in Washington, D.C., Its artistic director is the Mexico|Mexican tenor Plácido Domingo.

The Washington Opera was established in 1957 as the Opera Society of Washington by Day Thorpe, the music critic of the Washington Star. Paul Callawy, the choirmaster and organist of the Washington Cathedral, was the first music director.

In the early years, the company performed in the DAR Constitution Hall. Currently, it is housed in the Kennedy Center.
