Lake Orion is a village located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,715. The official motto of the city/township/village is "Where living is a vacation". Although the official population of the village is only 2,715, Orion Township's population is much larger and is generally considered Lake Orion. Lake Orion and its surrounding areas is one of the largest and fastest growing suburban areas in Michigan, greatly helped by the development of super-mall Great Lakes Crossing.

Lake Orion (or Orion Township) is home to Lake Orion High School, Bald Mountain State Park, Indianwood Golf and Country Club, Canterbury Village, The Scripps Mansion, and a General Motors manufacturing plant.

Jimmy Hoffa, William Edmund Scripps ,and Michael Stephen Lolich of the Detroit Tigers (now retired), are among those that kept residences in Lake Orion. Lolich operated a donut shop for a time, located just north of the village off M-24.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 40.62% water.

Local Sports

Lake Orion High School is home to a vast array of award-winning athletic and adacemdic teams. Ranging from High School Wrestling State Champions, Robotics, and even the School Band, the school hosts dozens of teams and clubs that accomplish many things and often help around the town. Lake Orion High School's Marching band is among the top ten(10) best marching bands in the state of Michigan.

The high school offers excellent facilities, such as a football field with FieldTurf, several baseball and softball diamonds, and a large Natatorium. The top of the line gymnasium has served as the location for many regional and state championship contests, as well as AAU and Special Olympics events.

The Detroit Pistons play home games nearby at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,715 people, 1,198 households, and 633 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,379.3/km² (3,575.4/mi²). There are 1,320 housing units at an average density of 670.6/km² (1,738.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.79% White, 0.26% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 2.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,198 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.1% are non-families. 38.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $51,311, and the median income for a family is $71,250. Males have a median income of $51,012 versus $37,802 for females. The per capita income for the village is $28,671. 5.6% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 21.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
