Gym & Leader

Her English name Roxanne was probably chosen because it starts with a sound similar to 'rock'. She is also called Roxanne in French due to its similarity to "roche"("rock"). Her German name, "elizia, comes from "felsen"(stone). Petra, her Italian names, is very similar and also means "pietra"(rock, stone). She is called Petra also in Spanish because of its similarity to the word "piedra" and "petreo", "stone" and "rocky".

Roxanne is a character in the Pokémon video game series. She is the first gym leader in the Hoenn region and resides in Rustboro City. Her gym is similar to Brock's gym from the previous pokemon series. She is an expert on Rock-types.

Roxanne's Team -

Nosepass Nosepass Nosepass' nose works as a large compass. The magnetic nose is always pointed north. Due to the powerful magnetic force exerted by the nose; no Nosepass is able to face another Nosepass, as their noses repel one another.

Nosepass can only be found by using HM06 Rock Smash, on small rocks, in Dewford Cave near Dewford Town. In terms of battle, Nosepass has superb Defense and above-average Special Defense. Unfortunately, Nosepass has dismal Hit Points (HP), with a base-stat of 30 HP — only slightly better than that of Magikarp.

Roxanne's LVL15 Nosepass uses both Rock Tomb and Block, two signature attacks.

Geodude Geodude Geodude has a rock for a head and no nose. Its long arms start with a bulging muscle and end with rock hands resembling a human's. It is very strong, as witnessed in various episodes of the anime.

Geodude most frequently are found in fields and on mountains. It is precisely this that makes people step or trip on them from time to time, thinking they were rocks. Its arms are so strong that it can use them to climb mountains.

Geodude is favourite choice for many trainers, known as Hikers, in the games, as well as gym-leaders, Roxanne and Brock. It is favoured for it's strong defense and strong evolutions, but few trainers prevent it from evolving it into Graveler.

TM awarded: TM39 Rock Tomb - Boulders are hurled at the foe. It also lowers the foe's SPEED if it hits.

Strategies

The main weaknesses of Rock-types are:

A number of good Pokémon that are available before the match can easily take on Roxanne's team, below are some common teams that will easily defeat her Rock-types -

Mudkip Mudkip Mudkip Method

Mudkip is a Water-type/Ground-type, giving it a range of attacks suitable for battling Roxanne. Levelling Mudkip up to LVL15 teaches it both Water Gun and Mud Shot.

Treecko Treecko Treecko Method

Treecko, a Grass-type, is perhaps the worst Pokémon at this stage of the game, only knowing a single, weak Grass attack, Absorb. It's other main physical attack, Pound, is very weak against Rock-types, resulting Treecko being of little use here.

Using one of the Pokémon effective (see below) against Roxanne that can be caught in the wild.

Combusken Torchic - Combusken Torchic/Combusken Method

This is more of a Combusken Method, as you can only kick Roxanne's butt with Double Kick. This move is learned by Combusken,Fire-type/Fighting-type, a straight after it evolves at LVL16, but is well worth the effort involved. Double Kick, though not powerful in particular is a great "Sweeper" move, and can knock out lots of Pokémon very quickly. It also is a great move against Normal-types, which accounts for a lot of the Pokémon in the game.

By using Double Kick quickly, Nosepass should not have a chance to use Rock Tomb, and take advantage of the Fire weakness of Combusken.

NOTE: Evolving Torchic before the mid-fifties will alter the move list it can learn, evolving it normally will allow Blaziken to learn Blaze Kick, but not evolving Torchic until LVL45 will allow it to learn Fire Spin and Flamethrower.

Other Useful Pokémon

Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire is known to have the widest choice of Pokémon at the beginning of the game, allowing the player to pick a very free-form team. The protagonist has to pass through the Routes connecting Littleroot Town, Oldale Town, Petalburg City and Rustboro City, and Petalburg Woods, from which a variety of Pokémon from various terrain are catchable.

Seedot Seedot Seedot is a Grass-type, only found in the Ruby version of Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire. Can learn both Absorb and Nature Power as it reaches LVL13. Though it shares some of the same problem as Treecko does, another Grass-type with Absorb and a second attack will make the battle go easier.
Lotad Lotad Lotad is a Grass-type, only found in the Sapphire version of Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire. Can learn both Absorb and Nature Power as it reaches LVL13. Though it shares some of the same problem as Treecko does, another Grass-type with Absorb and a second attack will make the battle go easier.
Shroomish Shroomish Shroomish, a Grass-type, is the best Pokémon to use in this match, and if you can find it in Petalburg Woods, you should definitely add it, no matter your starter. If your chose Mudkip or Treecko as your starter, Breloom (the evolution of Shroomish) is a great Pokémon to have on your team, as it learns all of Blaziken's Fighting-type attacks. Shroomish learns Leech Seed, Absorb and the powerful Mega Drain, by LVL16. If you don't have a Torchic, or are simply holding off evolving it into Combusken, Shroomish is the best answer.
Wingull Wingull Wingull is a Water-type/Flying-type, which learns Water Gun and Wing Attack at LVL10. Though Wingull is accessible and strong, it's main problem is it's Flying weakness, which will result in Rock Throw, OHKOing Wingull.

In the Pokémon Anime

Roxanne is not only a teacher but also a gym leader at the Pokémon Trainers' School in Rustboro City. She teaches an introductory course on Pokémon to young children not old enough to be trainers.

In one episode, Ash must defeat Roxanne. Her main Pokémon of use is Nosepass. Ash's Pikachu defeats Nosepass by using Iron Tail, a Steel-type attack that is super-effective against the Rock-type Nosepass.

Brawly is a character in the Pokémon series. He is a gym leader in the Hoenn region and resides in Dewford Town. His gym is a pitch black maze. To slowly lighten up the gym you must defeat the trainers inside. He is an expert on Fighting-type Pokémon.

Brawly's Pokémon :

Machop Machop Machop's muscles are specially adapted for constant use, with improved facilities to move lactic acid out of them. The strongest Machop on record (in the video games) was able to lift and throw 10 tons. Machops are also highly intelligent, which is an added advantage in battle. It often joins Pokémon dojo-style training grounds, primarilly for, not just, Machop, but others, including Geodude and Graveler.
Makuhita Makuhita pp
Hariyama Makuhita - Hariyama pp

In the Pokémon Animé

Brawly is a Gym Leader who likes to Surf and train his Pokémon at the same time. His Pokémon move like the waves, always changing and avoiding attacks through the course of battle. He also has a private island which has a training facility and a battle field that has many geysers on it.

Ash loses to Brawly the first time as he just used brute strength. However, in the rematch, his Pokémon Corphish and Treecko use the forces of nature to defeat his Machop and Hariyama.

Wattson

File:0025.jpg
Wattson in the anime.

Wattson is a character in the Pokémon series. He is a gym leader in the region and resides in Mauville City. He is an expert on Electric-type Pokémon. An old man, Wattson is almost always seen smiling (his sprite even shows him laughing). Defeating Wattson will earn the trainer the Dynamo Badge.

When the trainer returns to Mauville City after defeating Norman, Wattson will appear and ask the trainer to fix some problems at New Mauville, where the electrical power station needs problems.

Wattson's Pokémon

In the Pokémon Animé

Wattson always likes a good joke, as any visitors (gym challengers or not) take a roller coaster ride, ending up against a mechanical Raikou.

Ash surprisingly defeats Wattson easily with just his Pikachu as Electric-type moves are not very effective against Electric-type Pokémon. Wattson dejectedly plans to retire from his Gym Leader post but regains his fighting spirit after helping to defeat Team Rocket. It is revealed that Pikachu's Electric attacks had been temporarily supercharged when he destroyed the mechanical Raikou, which allowed him to overwhelm Wattson's Pokémon. Ash, hoping to get a fair rematch, tries to return his Dynamo Badge and earn it back fairly, but Wattson asks him to keep it because Wattson realizes that he also needs to continue training.

He and Ash meet again later in the series and have their rematch. Wattson's training has paid off and he beats Ash.

When you battle her, Flannery has recently inherited leadership of the gym from her Grandfather (revealed in the games to be a former Elite Four member), and has a reputation to live up to. At this point in her career, she seems uncertain and inexperienced.

Battle -

To get to Flannery, you must hop on a number of transport pads, similar to Sabrina's gym in Pokemon Red/Blue. There are also a series of trainers guarding the pads. ((Needs links))

Flannery's Pokémon -

TM Awarded: TM 50 Overheat - A very powerful fire attack, but SPT. ATTACK greatly falls after use.

In the Pokémon Animé

Ash arrives in Lavaridge Town to find that Flannery has only been the Gym Leader for only a few days. Her grandfather recently left on a journey to write better poetry. However, he secretly spies on her to see how she is doing, as the older citizens of the town are not expecting him back for a long time. He comes in disguised as a Pokémon referee. He helps Flannery out but eventually loses his disguise.

The battle between Flannery and Ash is intense. Both sides make entertaining moves. Eventually, a fired-up Torkoal faces Ash's sleeping Corphish. However, Corphish eventually wakes up to defeat Torkoal. Ash wins his fourth badge.

Juan is a character in the Pokémon video game series. He is a gym leader in the Hoenn region and resides in Sootopolis City. Like his favorite student, Wallace, Juan is an expert on Water-type Pokémon. In Pokémon Emerald, Juan has become the gym leader, as Wallace is now the Pokémon League Champion.

Juan's Team

In the animé

Juan is also the Sootopolis gym leader in the anime (and the last gym leader that Ash faces), but Wallace is not mentioned. Also in the anime, Juan is a former Pokémon Contest Champion. As a result, his Gym is very stylish, especially compared to the swimming pool of the Cerulean City Gym. In both the anime and game, Juan uses five Pokémon in his gym battles, though his lineup is different in the anime (which uses the same Pokémon as Wallace did in Ruby/Sapphire) and the game. This battle lasts two episodes.

In the first episode, the battle begins with a two-on-two battle. Juan chooses Sealeo and Seaking, and while they defeat Ash's Snorunt, they are beaten by Pikachu and Corphish. In the second round, the field and positions are switched, and Ash starts with Grovyle, while Juan uses Luvdisc to defeat him. Ash sends out Corphish once more, who defeats Luvdisc, but the crab Pokémon is quickly defeated by Wiscash. Ash defeats Wiscash with his Swellow, and then continues against Juan's best Pokémon: Milotic. Milotic defeats Swellow, but is ultimately defeated by Pikachu, using a full power Thunder attack beneath the water. Juan awards Ash with the Rain Badge and directs them to the next Pokémon Contest, in Pacifidlog Town.

As well as the Pokémon above, Juan has several other Pokémon in the anime. In the game, as well as Luvdisc, Sealeo and Wiscash, he uses:

Wallace

Template:Pokesectstub Wallace is a character in the Pokémon video game series. He was once the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City. He was soon relieved by Juan. He then became champion of Hoenn's Elite Four. He is an expert on Water types. In all games, Wallace is the guardian of the Cave of Origin, where deceased Pokémon are resurrected and where you catch Groudon and Kyogre in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, respectively.

English: Wallace, French: Marc, German: Wassili, Italian: Adriano, Spanish: Plubio.

His English name means "a stranger," but it may have been chosen because it share some similarities with "water", "waterfall", "swell". His French name is "Marc", that is similar to "mer", "maree" or "marin" ("sea", "tide", "marine"). "Wassili", his German name, is obviously a pun on the word "wasser"("water"). His Italian name is "Adriano", that contains the letters of "idro", an Italian suffix meaning "hydro". His Spanish name is "Plubio", that is very similar to "pluvial" or "pluvioso" ("pluvial" or "rainy").
