Publius Quinctilius Varus the Younger
Quinctilius Varus or Publius Quinctilius Varus the Younger was the only child to Roman General and Politician Publius Quinctilius Varus from his second marriage to Claudia Pulchra. His maternal grandparents were Claudia Marcella Minor (daughter of consul Gaius Claudius Marcellus and Octavia Thurina Minor, sister of Caesar Augustus) and consul Aemilius Lepidus Paullus (nephew of Triumvir Marcus Aemilius Lepidus). His parental grandparents were senator Sextus Quinctilius Varus and a daughter from Marcellus’ first marriage.
Through his mother he was the first cousin to Roman Empress Valeria Messalina, her brother Marcus Valerius Messala Corvinus II, second cousin to Messalina’s children Claudia Octavia and Britannicus. His second cousins were also Augustus’ great grand-children Aemilia Lepida I and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.
He was born in Rome between 1-6AD and was raised there. In 7AD, his father was appointed German Governor. His father in September 9AD, committed suicide in defeat due to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, Germania Inferior. His mother never remarried. In 26AD, his mother died in exile as a victim of the treason trials. Through his parent’s inheritance he became wealthy.
Younger Varus became another victim of Sejanus' treason trials. In 27AD, he was charged with treason and was condemn. Tiberius didn’t do anything to save his relative.
