Codename: Kids Next Door, also known as Kids Next Door or by its acronym KND, is an American animated television series that debuted on the Cartoon Network on December 6,2002. Broadcast as two episodes per half-hour (except for a few half-hour episodes, the first being "Op G.R.O.W.-U.P."), the central characters of the series are five ten-year olds who operate out of their treehouse against the tyranny of adults (e.g. early bedtimes, homework, and any place where kids aren't allowed). The series was created by Tom Warburton.
To accomplish their various missions, the Kids Next Door have access to a variety of gadgets and devices stored in their treehouse (often Rube Goldberg devices that are products of "two-by-four technology") as well as a worldwide organization known as the Kids Next Door.
Storylines
One ongoing plot arc involves attempts by two former Kids Next Door, Cree (formerly Numbuh 11, who's also Numbuh Five's older sister) and Chad (formerly Numbuh 274, who escaped the KND mandatory decommissioning and memory wipe on his thirteenth birthday), to destroy the Kids Next Door Moonbase. These missions are often coordinated by "Father" (real name Mr. Wigglestein, according to Operation A.R.C.H.I.V.E.), a shadowy figure who has redoubled his efforts to destroy the Kids Next Door after the Delightful Children (whom he's raised) have failed to do so. This arc stem runs through Operations S.U.P.P.O.R.T., K.I.S.S., S.P.A.C.E. and E.N.D.
A recurring story involves the KND fighting the Delightful Children over the latters' birthday cake. These stories always have the word "CAKED" in the title.
Kids Next Door episodes are always titled by acronyms which often give viewers clues to what the story is about (e.g., "Operation: C.A.K.E.D.: Capture and Kidnapify Enemy Dessert"). Everyone involved with the show is credited as though they're secret agents (e.g., writers are "writing operatives", the voice cast is listed under "vocal assault").
In season 3, several stories take place at Gallagher Elementary School. This is due to the adults extending school to 52 weeks a year, according to a press release from Curious Pictures.[1].
Characters
- Numbuh 1 Nigel Uno,
- Numbuh 2 Hoagie Pennywhistle Gilligan Jr.,
- Numbuh 3 Kuki Sanban,
- Numbuh 4 Wallabee "Wally" Beetles,
- Numbuh 5 Abigail "Abby" Lincoln,
The Kids Next Door are regularly pitted against villains that embody the characteristics they resent. Among their more tenacious adversaries are the Delightful Children from Down the Lane, well-behaved, obedient children who want to eliminate them for setting a bad example; the Common Cold, who blames children's germs for his cold and seeks to make all children as sick as he is; Stickybeard, who, with his crew of Candy Pirates, sails about the city stealing candy from children; and Gramma Stuffum, who fattens up children with disgusting dishes from her bottomless cookpot.
Other adults who aren't enemies of the Kids Next Door (most often their parents) are often hidden characters whose faces are not usually seen. As of 2005, viewers have seen all the children's parents with the notable exception of Numbuh Two's father (whose absence is a point of debate among fans). And Numbuh fives mother and father whose faces are never seen for some strange reason.
On occasion, the younger siblings of the Kids Next Door have accompanied them on missions. A few episodes feature Numbuh Three's younger sister Mushi (Operations S.P.A.C.E., K.A.S.T.L.E., N.U.G.G.E.T., and C.L.U.E.S.), Numbuh Four's younger brother Joey (Operations S.P.R.O.U.T. and D.O.D.G.E.B.A.L.L.) and Numbuh Two's younger brother Tommy has gone on to become an adult-fighting crusader himself (he was a Kid Next Door, codenamed "Numbuh T", briefly, but he took himself out of their database to save the group; the KND security system won't let him re-enlist). He now goes by the alias "The Tommy" and functions as an independent operative.
The missions (Episode list)

Trivia
- The family name (a.k.a. last name, surname) of each kid is a reference to his/her code name.
- Numbuh 5 Abigail Lincoln. The $5 bill shows Abraham Lincoln.
- Numbuh 4 Wallabee Beetles. The Beatles had four members (Mr. Warburton, creator of the show, did not understand that the name of the band came from BEAT instead of the beetle insect).
- Numbuh 3 Kuki Sanban. "三番 (pronounce: sanban)" means Number three in Japanese.
- Numbuh 2 Hoagie P. Gilligan, Jr.. He is the second person in his family to have the name; and Gilligan, a character in the television comedy series Gilligan's Island, is the second in command of the S.S. Minnow.
- Numbuh 1 Nigel Uno. "Uno" means one in Spanish and Italian.
- In the show's pilot episode, Numbuh 4 was refered to as Wallace, not Wallabee.
- There are many parodies of Marvel Comics in N.A.U.G.H.T.Y., the Christmas special.
- Santa's attack squad is called Elfa Strike, an obvious pun of Marvel Comics' Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight, who originally had Wolverine as one of its members.
- The opening and closing images are based on a classic X-Men comic book cover
- The Faculty Four are a loose interpretation of the Fantastic Four.
- The spherical gift-delivering device is based on Professor Xavier's Cerebro device.
- Numbuh Three bears more than a passing resemblance to the X-Men's Dark Phoenix after her corruption by the high-tech Reindeer device.
- The voiceover throughout the episode is reminiscent of Stan Lee (Marvel Comics founder and the creator of Spider-Man).
- U.N.C.O.O.L. (#69), has a scene in which an Operative escapes when his other operatives were taken by Nerd Zombies. One of the balloons depicts Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory.
- A.R.C.H.I.V.E. (#59), is a parody of the The Second Renaissance sequences in The Animatrix, and is a historical record of the rising of adults over their creators, the kids. Although the teacher declares at the end of the episode that the events described are just the works of Numbuh 1's overactive imagination, that may just be what his teacher wants the other students to think.
- Also in A.R.C.H.I.V.E (#59) one of the kids is a parody of Satoshi/Ash Ketchum, the title character of the Pokémon anime series, he also appears again in a later episode.
- From season 4 (Ops R.A.B.B.I.T. and F.L.U.S.H. onwards), the closing credits were redone, so that they show on half the screen (the secret agent-themed crediting and closing theme remain) with a "beauty shot" on the right. This is usually showcasing a humorous event inspired from the episode which follows the ending. The storyboard of one such sequence can be seen here. (These type of credits were also used in the first two season 3 episodes (F.U.T.U.R.E., A.F.L.O.A.T., and L.E.A.D.E.R.), while other episodes in that season used the old credits.)
- For Halloween, Numbuh 1 is dressed as a Borg from Star Trek.
- S.N.O.W.I.N.G. (#90), while not a complete parody on the scale of A.R.C.H.I.V.E., has enough Star Wars references (both from the original films and the prequels) to be an obvious parody. (Lizzie's hair is curled up in the way Leia's is) These included 2x4 Tech versions of Imperial Walkers, the AT-ATs, the Hall Monitors controlling the Bus Walkers were dressed as the Storm and Snow Troopers, the infamous Force-choke, "Sled Wings" coming from "Snow Speeders" and book-plated versions of the droidekas from the Prequel Trilogy, the robots that surround Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn and roll up into a ball to move. Even the shot and camera angle of the Imperal Walker-esque vehichles coming towards the protagontists is faithfully carried over from Episode V. Also, the battle of Hall Monitor's ruler and mop between Numbuh 1 and Jimmy is a recreation of the epic battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It is very easy to see that this is a recreation of The Battle of Hoth. F.L.I.E.R.P.L.A.C.E. is a parody of the Star Wars' X-Wing. This episode also aired the same day that Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released in theaters on U.S.
- B.U.L.L.I.E.S. (#100), is a spin-off of Jurassic Park (even the villain's name, Jerry Rassic is a pun on "Jurassic"), where all of the bullies resemble dinosaurs, e.g. the Spit-ball-o-sauruses resemble the Dilophosaurus. Wet Willie Mammoth is a parody of the Woolly Mammoth.
- F.I.S.H.Y (#101), is a parody of the movie Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in which Numbuh 4 treats the fish as the ring and is adamant to cast it into the volcano.
- Numbuh 4's soda in the mission G.H.O.S.T. (#36) came from a soda dispenser labeled "Dolt", an obvious play on Jolt Cola.
- There is a KND Movie "Operation: Z.E.R.O" slated for release in 2006, which will have Kids Next Door operatives Numbuh Zero & Numbuh 101. It might also be the final episode. Also,it might be a movie theatre film.
- So far the series has inspired 2 videogames: "Operation: S.O.D.A." for the Game Boy Advance and "Operation: V.I.D.E.O.G.A.M.E." for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
- Numbuh 5's father, Dr. Lincoln, is an obvious parody of Bill Cosby. The same voice actor of Dr. Lincoln also portrayed Bill Cosby in Family Guy.
- The KND musicial score is composed by Steve Rucker & Tom Chase. The end theme song is sung by Fake Brain.
- In Operation G.R.A.D.U.A.T.E.S., the Delightful Children From Down the Lane turn into sheep characters identical to those in the Cartoon Network's show "Sheep in the Big City" (the front one looking EXACTLY like the one in "Sheep in the Big City"), which was also made by Curious Pictures.
- KND were referred to in The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. In the episode Sickly Sweet, Grim was watching TV, and someone sounding like Numbuh 4 said: "Numbuh 3! Get back to the treehouse to help Numbuh 2 to clean up this mess, before Numbuh 1 gets back!"
- Throughout many missions a kid dressed up as Ash of Pokémon is seen in the show but is unnamed or mentioned. He can be clearly seen in Operation: A.R.C.H.I.V.E. in the adult creation scene.
- In Season 4's Operation: L.O.V.E., Numbuh 1 wears red and green glasses that make him look like Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan.
- In Operation: K.N.O.T., Froggy is an obvious parody of Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
- In Operation: D.O.D.G.E.B.A.L.L., near the end when the Dodgeball Wizard summons a gigantic Dodgeball above the city, is very similar to a scene in the ending battle between Neo and Smith in the Matrix Revolutions. The music played during this scene is a very similar orchestral theme common in the Matrix movies.
- A scene in Operation: P.R.E.S.I.D.E.N.T. is also similar to a scene towards the end of the Matrix Revolutions when Numbah 2 flies the School Bus 1 upwards over a blockade of Icecream Trucks.
- Certain episodes featuring Numbah 5 as the main character are loosely based on the Indiana Jones series and have her pitted against a boy named Heinrich, who seeks artifacts for evil, similar to the villains in these movies.
- In Operation: F.U.T.U.R.E., When you see Numbuh 1 as a girl, his dress and manner looks like Lucy from the Peanuts comic. The dress he wears is blue, and has black hair on his head.
- A few epsiode has Numbuh 4 as the star,he tempoary was the star of G.H.O.S.T when the hamsters where using his soda
- Hamsters appear in many epsiodes.
- Some titles of this show has the word Code in it.
- In OPERATION P.O.O.L,Numbuh 4 says "Who wants to use their get out jail card first?". Get out jail cards are used in Monopoly.
- Another TV Movie/Theater Movie,OPERATION V.I.L.L.I.A.N.S is getting planned to launch on TV. It also might be the final episode instead of OPERATION Z.E.R.O.
- This series was a Happy Meal Toy at Carl's Jr.
