‘’‘Shanghai Medical University‘’‘ is the earliest medical institution of higher learning established and run by the Chinese themselves. It was founded in 1927, originally called The Fourth Zhongshan University Medical College, and in 1928 renamed National Central University Medical College. It became an independent college in 1932, named as National Shanghai Medical College. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was renamed in 1952 The Shanghai First Medical College. In 1959, it was designated by the central government as one of the sixteen national key institutions of higher learning. Shanghai Medical University was given the present name in 1985.
