The university in Lund, Sweden, was founded in 1666, although there were anterior academic institutions, a studium generale, the mediaeval Latin term for a university, was established in 1483 within the Franciscan friary, and prior to this in 1085, a school for the training of priests was set up. Today the university has over 34000 persons studying the 50 programmes or 800 separate courses.

Lund University is divided into several faculties:

  • Technology (Lund Institute of Technology, LTH)
  • Science
  • Law
  • Social Sciences (including the School of Economics and Management)
  • Medicine
  • Liberal Arts and Theology
  • the Performing Arts (the Academies of Music, Art, and Theatre).

There are also university departments located in Malmö and Helsingborg.
