"A Descent into the Maelstrom" is a short story by one of the masters of the genre, Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by the Moskstraumen, it is couched as a story within a story, a tale told at the summit of a mountain climb, and deals with a shipping accident in which the narrator relates how he was sucked into a massive whirlpool.
