Smiths is a town located in Lee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 21,756.

Smiths Station is located at 32°32'21" North, 85°5'55" West (32.539259, -85.098703)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 186.2 km² (71.9 mi²). 184.3 km² (71.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,756 people, 7,806 households, and 6,252 families residing in the town. The population density is 118.0/km² (305.7/mi²). There are 8,437 housing units at an average density of 45.8/km² (118.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.79% White, 12.67% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 2.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,806 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.9% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,977, and the median income for a family is $47,765. Males have a median income of $32,246 versus $23,707 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,608. 8.9% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.6% are under the age of 18 and 11.2% are 65 or older.
