Hey Erik, you don't have to use the UL and LI tags; you can simply use asterisks for bulleted lists. e.g.
- bananas
- kiwifruit
- apples
Anyway, cheers, and a much belated welcome to wikipedia. :-) --KQ
KQ, thanks, I know, it's just an old habit. In newer pages I use wiki-style lists. --Eloquence 15:49 Nov 11, 2002 (UTC)
Hi El. It's better to use the "move page" feature instead of cut-paste to a new name, because a move preserves page history. -- Tarquin
- Thanks for the hint, I actually thought of "Move page", but too late :-) --Eloquence 12:49 Nov 12, 2002 (UTC)
- no problem, I fixed it. Welcome to the 'pedia :-) -- Tarquin 19:15 Nov 12, 2002 (UTC)
Hi. I made "art" lowercase in erotic art in Pompeii. I hope this didn't throw you off. --Ed Poor
- No problem, sorry for the capitalization, I just can't get used to writing titles in lower case. --Eloquence 23:53 Nov 15, 2002 (UTC)
Grrr... when you reverted Lir's page you removed my notation about the Maxwell article! :( --Dante Alighieri
- The User:Lir page should be frozen. There's no reason to edit it. --Eloquence 10:21 Nov 25, 2002 (UTC)
- Well, I cleaned up the Maxwell entry earlier tonight. Since the name of the entry changed I wanted to make sure that the link on Lir's page went to the right place. Since Lir can't edit the page at the moment, I made a notation so that anyone who wanted to read the article could find it. The link from Lir's page was the only link to that spelling (currently a redirect) so I thought it would be helpful. Was I wrong? --Dante Alighieri
- When I restored the page I made sure your edits were included. Cheers! --Clutch
- You had good intentions. The problem is that you edited the vandalized version of Lir's page. Feel free to revert Clutch's continuing vandalism and to correct Lir's last version of the page. --Eloquence 10:28 Nov 25, 2002 (UTC)
- I think I'll just stay out of this one for now. :) So much for good intentions! :) --Dante Alighieri
- That's too bad, because it's a fairly obvious case of vandalism, with the difference that Clutch tries everything to sound reasonable. It's what's called an "elaborate troll" in Internet lingo. --Eloquence 10:41 Nov 25, 2002 (UTC)
- As a many-year veteran of usenet, I'm no stranger to trolls. ;) I'm just saying that there's obviously a lot of history about this Lir person that I know nothing about. I just started on wikipedia about a week ago, so I'll just sit quietly and let someone who knows more about it than I do take the stage... for now at least. --Dante Alighieri
Hey, Eloquence... maybe lay off a bit on the Harry Potter guy? I mean, no need to get people all riled up... people are entitled to their beliefs... whether or not we agree with their "interpretations" of reality. --Dante Alighieri
- Part of my belief system is not to show tolerance towards intolerance and to try to speak the truth whenever someone tells lies, sorry. But as I said, I'm willing to work on NPOV articles covering the Harry Potter "witchcraft" issue from both sides. --Eloquence
- Understood.. I just try to defuse any potential flame wars I see brewing... and in my experience, people who have beliefs that are in line with what I believe our "friend" believes tend to be very vocal and long winded when confronted. Not that I disagree with you on philosophical grounds, just practical... after all, this isn't really the forum for that kind of debate/argument. --Dante Alighieri
- Who says it isn't? Talk pages are for talking, aren't they? Wikipedia has no size limits ;-) --Eloquence 00:27 Nov 27, 2002 (UTC)
- Oh! Speaking of which, is there any way that you know of to donate or contribute to the fund for running this place? I mean, it can't be cheap to host and house all this data. --Dante Alighieri
- It ain't cheap, but right now, Jimbo Wales is paying it out of his own pocket (hey, the guy recently gave his Ferrari away in a private homepage contest, so he must have some money). I'm not sure if he accepts donations. In the long term I plan to help to set up a writers' fund, parts of which could go to paying the server costs. --Eloquence
- ... ... *stunned silence* ... OK, I still have student loans... I'm not sending money to anyone who can afford to give away a Ferrari. ;) Seriously though, it might be a good idea to set up a micro-donations system... Not many people are gonna give $20 to the cause, but lots of people would probably give a quarter. --Dante Alighieri
- Oh, you'd be surprised. I run a donation box on my site, infoAnarchy, and the donations I get are usually in the $10 range. Wikipedia would almost certainly be eligible for EU funds as well, being such an international project and all, but Jimbo declines taking money from governments, because he's a die-hard libertarian :-(
- Grrr... read the latest "insightful comment" from our friend on the Harry issue... --Dante Alighieri
- You should worry more about his upcoming edits to the actual articles ;-) --Eloquence
Check out Exodus 22:18. --Dante Alighieri
It's OK, I like having different translations. Fundamentalists do, too: Many of them have multi-translation bibles with the text flowing in separate columns, so they can always pick the version they like the most :-). But if you want my standards for a good article, here's what needs to be done:
- Add the year numbers for each different translation and possibly links
- Add some background on the original Hebrew, and possibly the Septuagint version
- Add references to scholarly articles that have analyzed the subject, and look into etymology of the original Hebrew
- Provide context with regard to the relevance of this passage to the witchhunts
- Add some other context of people using this passage, historical+modern
- ...
I'm sure a whole book could be written about this. Maybe there already is one :-) --Eloquence
- I'd love to do all that and more... but first, a little thing called sleep. ;) --Dante Alighieri
Hi Pat, please note that the "Move this page" link in the sidebar is preferred to moving a page by hand, because it preserves the page's history. --Eloquence
- Sorry, I forgot (I use the nostalgia skin; do I have to change preferences to use move-page?).
- I guess this move cannot be corrected because new edits have already been made ? Patrick 13:56 Dec 2, 2002 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's not really worth the trouble. Regarding the skin, I recommend using the standard skin if at all possible, as it's the most up to date. --Eloquence
Please go easy on Fonzy. With a username that means "eloquent", you can afford to be especially sensitive to those whose command of English pales in comparison with yours. --Ed Poor
- The problem with Fonzy is that a single sentence he wrote contained about a dozen spelling errors, which is a lot, even for a dyslexic. As a result, Mav brushed him off rather quickly, even though Fonzy had a good idea (see Wikipedia:Wikipedians resources). That's why I explained to Fonzy that he should try to more carefully proofread his comments (which he evidently didn't do, as he replied rather quickly). The fact that Tarquin cleaned up after him may prove that the wiki principle works even in such extreme cases, but we'll have to see. The problem with you is that you have an opinion on everything without necessarily looking into the debate in question in sufficient detail! ;-) --Eloquence
- LOL, you're right about me! And Mav also tends to be brusque, as his user page says. I think in his case it's because he's usually in a hurry. I've noticed, though, that Fonzy is sensitive about his spelling, and I'm just trying to think of ways to grease the wheels around here. Sorry if I spilled some grease on your nose in the process :-) --Ed Poor
