Acharya Institute of Technology (AIT, Kannada: ಆಚಾರ್ಯಾ ಇನ್ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟ್ ಆಫ್ ಟೆಕ್ನಾಲಜಿ) is a private co-educational engineering and management college in Bangalore, India. AIT is affiliated with the Visvesvaraya Technological University and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. Established in 2000, it offers eleven courses at undergraduate level and six courses at postgraduate level.[14] AIT includes the NRV School of Architecture, which offers a five-year undergraduate course in architecture and is accredited by the Council of Architecture (COA).[15][16] The college has various collaborations and tie-ups with various industries and universities across the world.[17]

It is one of the several institutes run by the JMJ Education Society[4] and features in various rankings lists of top engineering colleges in India published by media agencies and publications like Outlook,[18] CSR-GHRDC,[19] Dataquest,[20][21][22] NASSCOM and Silicon India,[23] EFY.[24] In 2011 rankings, AIT was ranked among the top five Engineering colleges in Karnataka by the Global Human Resources Development Centre (GHRDC).[25] It features as an A+ institution in the rankings of the publication Career 360.[26] The college was also conferred with South India's Excellent Institution Award by A-Plus TV Media Works.[27]

AIT organises an annual week-long inter-collegiate cultural fest known as the Acharya Habba, which is one of the largest in Bangalore and Karnataka.[28][29][30]

The postgraduate courses in the institute, especially MBA, makes it one of most notable colleges in the Karnataka Management Aptitude Test (KMAT).[31]

History

The Acharya Institute of Technology (AIT) was established in 2000 by Shri Premnath Reddy, chairman of Acharya Group of Institutions.[3] The college is managed by the JMJ Education Society, headquartered in Bangalore.[4] AIT offers the Bachelor of Engineering course in eleven disciplines, and Master of Technology in four disciplines: Digital Communication Engineering and Biotechnology, Computer Science and Engineering, Machine Design, MBA and MCA. All courses are affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).[14]

It was the first college under the VTU to start an undergraduate course in Mechatronics Engineering in Karnataka.[32][33]

In 2009, the college constructed a 3-kilometre (1.9 mi) long road from its campus to the Hessarghatta Main Road. The road was inaugurated by Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Math in September 2010. The road is named after former Indian President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and is known as Acharya Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Road.[34][35]

Academic profile

Admission criteria

AIT admits students on basis of their Karnataka CET or their COMEDK UGET ranks.[36] AIT also admits students under Management quota, which does not place any merit requirements.

Yearly, AIT admits over 150 foreign nationals from 25 countries under the PIO Quota.[37][38]

There is a lateral entry scheme in place, by which students holding diploma degrees can enter directly to the second year of study In engineering. Students, after completing their graduation, receive a B.E. degree from the VTU.

Students are admitted to postgraduate courses on basis of their GATE test scores, as well as on their Karnataka Post Graduate CET (PGCET) and KMAT PGCET scores.[39]

Undergraduate courses

The college offers four year Bachelor of Engineering courses in 11 disciplines. All of these following courses are affiliated with the Visvesvaraya Technological University.[14][40]

Post Graduate courses

In addition to the B.E. courses, the college offers two year Master of Technology courses in four disciplines, MBA and MCA. All of the following courses are affiliated with the Visvesvaraya Technological University.[14]

Architecture

Acharya's NRV School of Architecture (ASA) offers a five year undergraduate course in architecture (B.Arch), which is accredited by the Council of Architecture (COA).[15][16]

Faculty

AIT maintains a Teacher-student ratio of 1:10.[41]

It is the first college in Karnataka to put in effect the Sixth Central Pay Commission recommendations for faculty pay scale.[42]

Research Centers

The Visvesvaraya Technological University has recognised four departments of AIT as Research Centers.[14][40]

The Institute receives MODROBS grant from AICTE for research activities and upgraded state of art lab facilities.[14]

Accredition and Rankings

College rankings

AIT is one of the few colleges in Karnataka to be accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).[44] It was the first college under the Visvesvaraya Technological University to start an undergraduate course in Mechatronics Engineering in Karnataka.[32] It is one of the seven colleges in Karnataka to be funded by the World Bank and is granted endowments by the Visvesvaraya Technological University to carry out research works in both its undergraduate and postgraduate departments.[33][45]

The college is ranked consistently among the top 50 Engineering colleges in India by publications and organizations namely Outlook India,[46][47] Data Quest,[20][21][22] NASSCOM and Silicon India,[23] EFY,[24] CSR-GHRDC[48][48] and CSR.[49] AIT was ranked among the top 5 Engineering colleges in Karnataka by the Global Human Resources Development Centre(GHRDC).[25] It was also bestowed South India's Excellent Institution Award by A-Plus TV Media Works.[27]

Administration

Governing council

The governing council of the college consists of 11 members. The body comprises five members from the JMJ Education Society, one staff representative, one University Grants Commission member, one AICTE nominee, one state government, Dept. of Technical Education nominee, one university nominee, and one Member Secretary, the principal.[13][50]

Academic council

The academic council of the college is headed by the principal. Student enrollments, academics, assessments, examinations are managed by the respective deans, controller of examinations and appointed faculty members. The college administration is managed by the director of administration. The research department is headed by the director of R&D. The placement department is managed by the principal, director of HR and one expert in the subject. Each academic department is headed by respective heads of departments (HoDs).[13][50]

Proctorial system

Faculty members are appointed as proctors for the students of their respective departments to monitor their attendance, performance in tests, co-curricular activities and personality development. Each proctor supervises 20 students in an academic semester.[13][50]

Educational facilities

The college has a Central Library with EDUSAT programmes, E-learning facilities and Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) gateway.[51]

The institution has various has collaborations with Multinational Corporations and has established various learning facilities like Vasundhara Industrial Automation Learning Center,[52] IBM Software Center of Excellence,[53] Microsoft IT Academy,[14] and Novell Centre of Excellence.[38]

International Academy for Competency Enhancement (IACE), the Finishing School of Acharya Institutes provides soft skills and technical trainings to students.[54]

Entrepreneur Incubation Cell

The college and signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IBM and has established IBM Entrepreneur Incubation Center in the campus.[55][56]

Infrastructure

The college provides a 24/7 campus Wi-Fi access.[57] The college has an Auditorium with a capacity of 500+ seats, Board rooms, Conference and Seminar Halls. The institution has its own multipurpose stadium known as the Smt. Nagarathnama Stadium with a capacity of over 10,000 people.[58] The college also has a National Technical Manpower Information System (NTMIS)[59] and 24/7 ATM center/outlet operated by Axis Bank. The college operates a Campus clinic which provides medical facilities to the students.

Environmental Initiatives

The institution has built its own sewage treatment plant in the campus and has employed methods for rain water harvesting. The campus also boasts of a four-acre artificial lake.[60]

Hostels and Canteens

AIT provides Hostel Accommodation for both boys and girls. The Hostel Mess serves North Indian, South Indian and Chinese cuisine. The college has separate Food Court, Cafeteria and Canteen which serve vegetarian food in the campus. The campus also houses a Coffee Day Xpress operated by the Coffee Day.[61]

Recreational Facilities

The college has a Student activity center which provides indoor games and gymnasium facilities. The institution also organises horse riding and yoga learning camps on campus for the students.[62][63]

Industry interaction

The college has industry collaborations and has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with Computer Society of India (CSI), Environ Software Pvt Ltd, IBM, Infosys, ISTE, Keane, Microsoft, Novell, Oracle, SAP Labs, Sun Microsystems, United Technologies, Vasundhara Automation and Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd. (VAES), VMware, Wipro and many other leading companies to increase the industry interaction.[38][64][65][66]

University twinning programs

AIT has twinning programs with foreign universities for student exchange programme and higher studies. Some of them are Jiujiang University, Shandong University, Ocean University of China and Hefei University in China; Old Dominion University in USA; Thames Valley University in UK; Andalusia Technology Park in Spain; Lübeck University of Applied Sciences in Germany.[67]

The college also has tie-ups with Mysore University, Mysore and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) in India.[68]

Cultural activities

The college organises an annual inter-collegiate culfest known as the "Acharya Habba" which sees a crowd of over 30000 students from over 300 colleges across Karnataka.[69][70][71]

Ethnic day

Students dress up in their traditional clothes highlighting the cultural importance of the region they belong to.[72]

Freshers' day

The Freshers are welcomed by the seniors of various departments of the college in an extravagant and cheerful way. The students of the college organise various cultural, extra-curricular and technical activities to greet and encourage the freshers who have joined the college. Various stalls are organised by different departments and clubs of the college to exhibit the facilities, rules & regulations and achievements of the college.[73]

Student projects

Hovercraft

An one-seater hovercraft was designed by a team of Mechanical Engineering students of AIT as their final year project work. The hovercraft measured 8.5 feet in length and runs on a Yezdi Roadking 250cc, 16 bhp, 2-stroke engine powered by Race Engine Technology. The engine can accommodate high load operating conditions and has been designed for low speed operations. The weighing capability of the craft is 260 kilograms. The hovercraft is also equipped with GPS and has been made cost efficient.[77]

Other

A mini car and a motor bike have been designed by the students of AIT which is fuel efficient and can run on alternative sources of energy, thereby saving the precious fossil fuels.[73]

Student counselling and guidance

Annually, AIT in collaboration with Indian Newspaper Deccan Herald and Prajavani, organises a career counselling for students who have just passed their Higher Secondary and Entrance examinations.[78][79][80][81]

Jnana Degula

The college co-organises an annual educational fair known as the Jnana Degula in the Palace grounds located in Bangalore. The students are guided to make an informed career choice which corresponds to their undergraduate education. The fair attracts various institutions across Karnataka to showcase their colleges and their facilities through stalls.[82][83]

Placements

Placement cell

The training and placement cell helps get students placed in Multinational corporations (MNCs) and Indian Companies. The cell appoints student placement coordinators from every department to manage its activities, which are guided by placement directors.[84] The placement cell also organises pool-campus placement drive for government and private colleges located in rural places of Karnataka.[85]

A few companies which have recruited from the college campus are ABB, Accenture, American Express, Biocon, BOSCH, CISCO, Cognizant Technologies, DELL, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Essar, Ford Motors, GE, Google India, Harley Davidson, IBM, Indian Air force, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Mcafee, Michelin, Punj Lloyd, Reliance Industries, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, L & T, Tata Elxsi and Wipro.[86]
