Harvest Moon: Magical Melody (牧場物語しあわせの詩 for ワールド, Bokujou Monogatari: Shiawase no Uta for World) (Songs of Happiness for World) is a game for the Nintendo GameCube by developer Marvelous Interactive, and the U.S. title is Harvest Moon: Magical Melody.
It was released in the U.S. (by Natsume, long-time producer of Harvest Moon games) on March 28, 2006. Individuals who pre-ordered the game got a plush sheep as a bonus. In the game, the Harvest Goddess has been turned to stone, so players are enlisted to help the Harvest Sprites restore her back to her normal self . To do this, players have to find a minimum of 50 musical tones (100 are available) by meeting different requirements and doing different things. People have the option of choosing to be male or female, and they have a choice of 10 (11 including the rival, who is always the opposite gender of the player) characters who they can marry.
A rival system has also been added to the game, the player's rival will compete for the magical notes as well as winning festivals and how much money they make that day. In the English version players will also be able to marry their rival whose name is Jamie (Jamie will always be the opposite gender of the character that they play, thus the players will always be able to marry them). Players can buy furniture and arrange it like in Animal Crossing, however there is no rating system.
Gameplay
D-pad: zoom in and out. B button: put stuff in rucksack. Y button: access different menu. C stick: cycle menus. X button: take the next thing out of the players' rucksack if there is nothing in hand. Perform specific actions like eating and using tools. L button: Cycle menus and whistle for pets and horses. R button: Highlights the square in front of the player if held down. Z button: 3 menus- Normal, Land highlight mode, name display. The game also includes several minigames where four players can test their skills.
Marriage
To get married, the player needs the third house extension, the big bed, the blue feather, and the player's intended spouse must have 8-10 hearts. Once the player has enough hearts, the mayor, Theodore, will tell the player that the feather is at the top of the mountain. The player must then get it and give it to the one the player loves to be married the next day.
Other characters may get married to each other as well, assuming the player doesn't first. The list of non-playable characters and their potential partners is as follows:
- Nina and Basil
- Ellen and Carl
- Maria and Ray
- Ann and Blue
- Eve and Dan
- Dia and Kurt
- Gina and Alex
- Gwen and Bob
- Katie and Joe
- Lyla and Louis
While both the male and female main characters can marry Jamie, the game will end if this happens.
Land
In this game, the "world" is the player's farmland. There are four different types of property: the player's, the townfolks', Jamie's, and land owned by no one. By pressing the ‘Z’ button, the land is automatically color coded. Blue represents your land, yellow is a townsperson's land, Jamie's land is red, and free land is green. The player must choose where to live, a crucial decision that greatly influences the characters' life. There are three plots to choose from: land in the northeast close to the town, land near the river, and land by the sea. The town farm is rather small, but it is close to the town and is fertile enough to raise fine crops. The land near the river is of average size so the player can easily fish for sustenance. Also, the river farm has the most fertile soil. The sea farm is rather large, but is far from the town and infertile. The farm may seem small, so it is possible to buy more land from Woody. When you first start, you are ONLY allowed the choice to purchase 2 plots of land, whichever 2 you didn't origonally pick to live at. How much the player is allowed to buy depends on the player's relationship with Theodore.
House
The players' house interior is now "customizable" - it is possible to buy new furniture, put things in storage, and move things around. Like the previous Harvest Moon titles, the player can upgrade his/her house and buy extensions that make the house larger, but this requires lumber, which can be bought or chopped.
Town
New shops and characters will arrive in town after performing certain tasks, like participating in a festival. Festivals are held every once in awhile in Flower Bud Square. The mayor will address you when you enter the square. All animals are bought from a shop now, along with all of the materials to run your farm. Buildings are put up on your property only when you call upon Woody and specify what type of building you want. You may also need to buy some property to be able to fit the type of building you want too.
Tools
Like in Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, tools can be upgraded. The player can either buy them new from Ann's father, which is rather pricey, or give the tool to the blacksmith along with ore the player has mined and wait a few days. If the tools are upgraded, hold down the button to use the tool in a larger area or a more powerful intensity (depending on the tool). All items are kept in your rucksack. The first rucksack holds 5 items, but the rucksack can be upgraded so that it ultimately can hold 15 items. To receive the larger (holds 15 items) rucksack, you must first befriend Martha at the clinic. Martha will arrive after you have shipped all the herbs that you find lying around the town. Then you will need to give her wool or yarn and she will eventually offer to make you a rucksack.
Mining
Normally it is possible only to mine behind Jamie's farm, but during the winter the lake freezes over, giving the player access another mine. Instead of using a hoe, use a hammer to smash rocks and minerals. When descending the levels (by standing on cracks, the player either goes down a random number of floors, or possibly even up) the gems and ore become more valuable. Some rocks and/or crystals send out gas when smashed, and though this sounds bad, sometimes, the gas helps. Gas has the following effects:
- Pink gas - replenishes energy
- Orange gas - temporarily paralyzes
- Purple gas - changes the controls
- Red gas - limits sight
- Yellow gas adds speed
On floor 100, the player receives a Power Berry.
Crops
Crops can be grown anywhere the player owns land. There are three types of soil: dry, moist, and wet (dry being the lightest and wet being the darkest). The wet soil is the most fertile, but the player can buy fertilizer (once 10 limestone are sold) to make dry soil moist and moist soil wet.
It is also actually possible to grow crops on public (green) land, but one must be careful when weeding as throwing them on public lands counts as littering.
Extensions
Extensions are bought at the Carpenter's shop from Woody, Kurt, and Joe. There are 7 levels of houses, and when the player upgrade his/her house, the player can change the color and texture. (Careful - right before buying the 7th extension, take the furniture out of the second floor, or it will be lost (*Fixed in the American version)). It is possible to also buy "extensions" for the players' property - such as a well, a watering hole (for watering can), and a windmill.
Wild Animals
All animals love getting gifts and attention - sort of like the townsfolk. When you befriend them, some of them will give you a musical tone. Some of the animals are:
to an island once the player has hearts for him.

===Seasons===
Here is a list of festivals and birthdays that occur in each season. Be warned, for some festivals, such as the Egg, Flower or Firefly Festivals, you must contribute whatever is needed, such as eggs, flowers or moonstones. They can be put in the silver shipping-like bin in the Town Square. If you do not help out, the festival will be cancelled and you will have to wait a year to attend the festival. Check the message board in the Town Square for notices of what needs to be contributed (the usual format is "Bring a _____!"). The notices usually appear a few days before the festival.
