Bashir Barghouti

Bashir Barghuthi (1931-2000) was a Palestinian Communist and journlaist. Born in Dayr Ghassana village in Ramallah district. While studying political science and economics at the American University of Cairo, where he met Arafat and became politically active, graduating in 1956. That year he founded the paper al-Jamahir (The Masses). Next year the paper was closed and Barghouti was forced to stay at Jaffar detention camp. When freed in 1965, he was refused a journalist's license, but continued to write under an assumed name. After 1967 he opposed the right of king Hussein of Jordan to speak on behalf of Palestinians. In 1973 he was allowed to return to West Bank. In 1974 he was acquitted of charges of espionage. In 1975 he took control of JCP when Suleiman Najjab was deported.
