all by rejection, confusion, or forced retreat by Misty (and later on, Max), often by the ear. A mysterious exception was Professor Ivy, the Pokémon Professor from the Orange Islands, and her three assistants, Faith, Hope, and Charity, with whom he spent some time away from the show. He later returns mysteriously but refuses to explain why he left her, simply getting queasy at reminiscing about it and saying "Don't mention that name!". Many fans speculate that Brock's apparent love for Professor Ivy simply went unrequited, or worse yet, Professor Ivy simply did not appreciate the work he did for her. Others have suggested more sinister explanations, as Brock is no stranger to romantic rejection, but there is no actual evidence to support such theories. However, in Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys Brock mentions Professor Ivy which means that he may have gotten over her.

Another one of the notable running gags is how Brock is forced to entertain an audience while other characters retrieve something (typically, a Pokémon that serves as the entertainer) stolen by Team Rocket, in which he does so by repeating one song ad nauseam to the point that he is either booed offstage or loses interest in singing. In Advanced Generation, he is often accompanied by Lombre in such a gag.

Brock is always well-equipped, and is sometimes the voice of reason when Ash and Misty (and later, May) get into an argument. He is also hardworking and is always willing to help others. Coupled with his experiences in taking care of others, Brock often prepares food and does most of the chores for the main characters. Brock is also exceptionally good at making food for Pokémon.

Because of his ambition to be a breeder first and trainer second, Brock is often depicted as an easily beatable trainer, despite being a former Gym Leader. However, he often acts as a judge or coach to other main characters, and in Advanced Generation, offers May and Max insights into what Ash is thinking during some of his gym battles. Brock also initially served as a mentor to the younger, inexperienced Ash. However, as Ash is now a veteran trainer in his own right, and himself fulfills the mentor role for May, that aspect of Brock's character is no longer emphasized. In League competitions, Brock and Misty are, in their words, Ash's two coaches.

Brock is one of the few characters (the others being Ash, Pikachu and Team Rocket) to appear in every Pokémon movie to date.

Brock is voiced by Yuuji Ueda in the Japanese version, and voiced by Eric Stuart in the English version.

Brock's Total Pokémon

Brock's Pokémon are mainly of the rock and ground varieties, although as a breeder, Brock has steadily trained Pokémon of other types (most notably, the Pokémon he acquires in the Hoenn region are, ironically, of water type). The Pokémon that he has in the animated series are:

Brock's Current Pokémon

Forretress Pineco - Forretress Brock caught a Pineco with a Fast Ball he received from Kurt, and it is the only Pokémon that Brock catches in Johto. One of Pineco's notable traits is its use of its Selfdestruct attack as a sign of affection.

Evolved as a Forretress, it is the only Pokémon that Brock brings to Hoenn. Among one of its frequently-used attacks is Rapid Spin, which is often used to clear away gases, to dry wet clothes, or to dig pitfall traps.

Attacks: Tackle, Rapid Spin, Selfdestruct, Explosion, Spikes.

Marshtomp Mudkip - Marshtomp Mudkip is one of the parental figure Pokémon on Brock's team, and along with Ash's Pikachu, is one of the Pokémon leaders when the Pokémon are away from their trainers.

Later in the series, Mudkip evolved into Marshtomp (in episode 148: Mizugorou and Mokoko! Wonder Drug of Love?).

Attacks: Water Gun, Mud Shot, Protect, Tackle.

Bonsly Bonsly Bonsly is a fourth generation Pokemon. Brock captured Bonsly in episode 155, while the group is at a ninja school.

It often shrieks but it usually does that to get the opponent to drop their guard. It also uses its Take Down to stop Brock from flirting with pretty girls. In one episode, Bonsly befriended a golden Sudowoodo.

Attacks: Fake Tears, Faint Attack, Double-Edge, Flail.

Pokémon Brock left at Pewter Gym

Onix Onix Onix was the very first Pokémon Brock started with, and it was given to him by his father on his tenth birthday. As a rock Pokémon, Onix is somewhat hydrophobic, weakening after exposure to water. For example, it was Pikachu accidentally setting off the Pewter Gym's sprinklers that won Ash his first gym badge over Onix.

Its power varies between episodes, being able to hold its against stronger Pokémon while being easily knocked out by weak Pokémon.

Onix is also depicted as the largest or heaviest Pokémon on any of the main character's team's, with the possible exeption of Ash's Snorlax, and as such is often used as a stepladder or a way to travel fast on rocky surfaces. When Brock returned to Pewter City after travelling around Johto, he gave Onix to his brother, Forrest.

Attacks: Tackle, Dig, Bind, Slam, Rock Throw.

Geodude Geodude Geodude is the only other Pokémon that Brock acquired prior to meeting Ash. Geodude is often depicted as a friendly and agreeable Pokémon, and was effectively the first Pokémon other than Pikachu that Larvitar opened up to.

When Brock returned to Pewter City after travelling around Johto, he gave Geodude to his brother, Forrest.

Attacks: Harden, Rock Throw.

Crobat Zubat - Golbat - Crobat Brock caught a Zubat when he first travelled through Mt. Moon with Ash. Its main use is its Supersonic attack, which made it the first Pokémon used for searches.

As a Golbat, its Supersonic had been known to overload computer sensors. When it evolves into Crobat, it is Brock's fastest and most loyal Pokémon.

When Brock returned to Pewter City after travelling around Johto, he gave Crobat to his brother, Forrest, despite the fact that it is not a Rock type and thus is not appropriate for use by the Pewter Gym Leader in official battles.

Attacks: Supersonic, Wing Attack.

Ludicolo Lotad - Lombre - Ludicolo Lotad is the first Pokémon that Brock captures in Hoenn. As a Lotad, it is an eccentric Pokémon who is constantly dreaming, to the point that it is often completely unaware of what is going on around it.

When it evolved into Lombre, it becomes somewhat more dependable. Its arsenal of moves is also unconventional, knowing both Razor Leaf and Water Gun.

It later evolves into Ludicolo, but Brock leaves it with his family after returning from Hoenn.

Attacks: Water Gun, Razor Leaf, Bullet Seed, Teeter Dance.

Pokémon left behind/set free

Kanto Losses

Tauros Tauros Brock caught a Tauros in one of the banned episodes, but it was never mentioned again. Some speculate that this Tauros may have found its way to Ash, who in the same episode caught a total of 30 of them, or that Brock simply had no use for a Tauros and allowed it to stay with Ash's "herd" at Professor Oak's lab.

Attacks: Tackle, Fissure, Take Down.

Johto Losses

Vulpix Vulpix Brock received Vulpix from Suzie, another Pokémon breeder. Vulpix is a powerful Fire Pokémon that Brock regularly grooms.

However, Brock has always considered Vulpix to be Suzie's Pokémon that he was merely "borrowing", and as such he gives it back to her when they met again.

Attacks: Fire Spin, Flamethrower, Tackle.
