Region of Waterloo International Airport or Kitchener/Waterloo Regional Airport, (IATA: YKF, ICAO: CYKF), is situated in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
History
The airport was formerly named Waterloo Regional Airport but this title is now taken by an airport in Waterloo, Iowa, United States. Established by Waterloo-Wellington Airport Commission in 1948 and completed in 1950, it became a general aviation facility in 1969. It operates 24 hours and seven days a week.
Expansion
While the airport has relatively little passenger traffic, it is the 16th-busiest airport in Canada by passenger movements (2004), and underwent a major expansion in 2003. Currently Northwest Airlines is the only airline with regular flights serving the airport, connecting to Detroit, Michigan in the United States (which was the rationale for the airport's recent re-designation as an 'international' airport). Canadian airlines have in the past offered commuter flights to Ottawa and Montréal, but these services have never proved successful. The Airport Authority has been in serious talks with Air Canada over a restoration of their Ottawa and Montreal services by their Air Canada Jazz division
As of late 2005, major vacation charters (primarily to the Caribbean) have begun to operate during their peak seasons.
