Wikipedians are the people who write and edit articles for Wikipedia. Some people might think that Wikipedist would be a more appropriate name, as an encyclopedist is someone who contributes to an encyclopedia. Some also think that "wikipediator" would be better than "wikipedians" as it is like an encyclopedia moderator (as said by avid 'wikipedian' boxbrown). The ending of Wikipedian, though, suggests being part of a group or community. So in this sense, Wikipedians are people who form The Wikipedia Community. For additional discussion of the Wikipedia community, see the Meta site [1] and Wikipedia:Who, Why?. For a scholarly view, see Motivations for contributing to online communities.
The number of Wikipedians has grown to more than 1.25 million (1,250,000 -- counting registered user accounts), plus an unknown, but quite large, number of unregistered contributors. Detailed statistical information about Wikipedia is available at Wikipedia:Statistics.
The diversity of Wikipedians renders it nearly impossible to make many categorical statements about Wikipedians as a whole. Information about many registered Wikipedians is available on their user pages. However, users are not required to create these pages or post information on them.
You could think of Wikipedians as a global ant colony—except there's no queen, and users choose their own roles. Some Wikipedians Welcome Newcomers, some Wikipedians award those whom they feel deserve awards. Some upload images, some work on history articles, and still others work on reverting vandalism. Many take on all of these tasks. Whatever you decide to do, every Wikipedian is valuable.
This page contains lists of Wikipedians by country, as well as various other groupings. Different categories have been created due to demand. Individual Wikipedians may add themselves to appropriate lists if they wish. It is suggested that if you put your name on one of the more specific lists, you should also include it on the alphabetical list.
Alphabetical listing
- Wikipedia:Alphabetical list of Wikipedians is a voluntary listing. Please add yourself to this list.
- This is being replaced by a set of Categories - see Category:Wikipedians and its sub-categories (such as Category:Wikipedians by location), and the new project page Wikipedia:User categorisation to help.
Listing by region
Please list yourself both by your nationality and also by your place of current residence. For example, if John has moved to the United States from Ireland, he can put himself in both places at once (if he wants to).
This system has been deprecated. This has been incorporated into a project to re-implement the user lists of Wikipedia:Wikipedians into a set of Categories. Feel free to help! Virtually all lists found listed as subsections of Wikipedia:Wikipedians should be eventually converted into Categories and their included links converted to the new system by tagging them in the appropriate new categories.
See Category:Wikipedians and Category:Wikipedians by location for more info. Please see the new project page at Wikipedia:User categorisation to help!
Basically if the link on the left is going to a subpage of Wikipedia:Wikipedians, it is still being crawled to eventually be replaced by the link on the right - once it has been replaced, it should link to the country's article instead, and the link to the new category should be made bold. If you are going to add yourself to any list, please use the new Categories instead of the old lists!
