Nash Family

Russell family

Angie arrived in 2002 with her son, Dylan, as the new principal of Summer Bay High. She caused a stir when she revealed that Rhys Sutherland was Dylan's father (this effectively destroyed his marriage and was later proved to be untrue). Angie continued to prove how rotten she was when she had an affair with school student Nick Smith and locked teacher Sally Fletcher in a classroom without her medication. Angie accidentally died as a result of a struggle between her and Dylan; when she tried to stop him from leaving home, he pushed her away. Angie stumbled, fell, and her head struck the edge of a coffee table.
Josie caused quite a stir when she arrived in 2004 because of her resemblance to the demonic but deceased Angie Russell, who turned out to be her cousin.

Smith family

Will Smith was Irene Roberts' foster child and the older brother of Hayley and Nick Smith. His good looks and sense of humour made him very popular, but he was plagued by family troubles. His father was an alcoholic, his mother was in an institution and his wayward brother was always in trouble. This caused Will to have quite a rebellious nature, which when added to a volatile relationship with local bad girl Gypsy Nash, made for an explosive combination. The relationship fell apart on more than one occasion due to Gypsy's cheating. Will's other love of his life was one Dani Sutherland. The two were inseperable for over a year and despite numerous troubles and tragedies (Will's father Ken died in an accident at the motor repair shop he ran; Dani was raped by Kane Phillips), the two were happy and strong. The discovery that his one night stand had made Gypsy pregnant tore their relationship apart and Will was heartbroken when Dani broke up with him. Will and Gypsy got back together for the sake of their baby and left Summer Bay together for a new life in Queensland.
Hayley made her first appearance in episode 2481 as a teen foster child who came to Summer Bay in the hopes of reuniting with her birth dad, Ken, & her older brother, Will. She was a keen artist, and had a real talent which was expressed throughout her time on the show. Her happy go lucky nature and beach babe style made her an instant favourite with viewers, and even more so when they paired her up with reformed bad boy Noah Lawson. The two became the soap's new golden couple until Noah was killed off leaving Hayley a widow. Following a long paternitygate storyline between herself, Kim Hyde and Scott Hunter (in which time the actresses playing Hayley had to swap due to Bec Cartwright's own pregnancy) the issue was finally tied up in the Australian 2005 finale of the show.

Sutherland family

The elder of twins, Kirsty was always more outgoing and confident than "twin sister" Jade. She had a rebellious attitude and had a habit of putting herself before everyone else. She went of the rails and experimented with dropping out of school, taking drugs and alienating everyone around her, including Jade and her older sister, Dani. Luckily she calmed down but still remained a constant headache to her parents. She dated local boy Seb Miller before cheating on him with Kane Phillips. This controversial relationship tore her family apart, and led to her father Rhys disowning her and her sister Dani feeling betrayed.
Kirsty was determined to get her own way, and rather than attend her father's wedding, she and Kane eloped and got married themselves. Rhys was furious that he was now related to the man that raped Dani, but Kirsty remained defiant. Her selfishness put a strain on her relationship with her family especially when she lied about being pregnant in order to stop her dad anulling the marriage. She fell preganant for real but lost the baby and needed a kidney transplant. The family wanted her real long lost twin Laura to donate but she refused as she barely knew Kirsty. Shelley eventually gave her kidney to her daughter. The Sutherlands reluctantly accepted Kane, and Kirsty fell pregnant again. She and Kane fled the Bay in 2005 after he was framed by his criminal father for armed robbery; having failed to turn up at court, he was found guilty in his absence.
Dani was the eldest of the Sutherland sisters, and probably the fiestiest of the three teenage girls. She had a good relationship with both her parents, but always felt that they took advantage of her good nature expecting her to look after the business, and her sisters Kirsty and Jade when they were busy at work. She was a city girl through and through and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to quiet little Summer Bay in 2000.
A quiet life she didn't get. Her life faced one trauma after another in the four years she lived in the Bay. She was raped by Kane Phillips, stalked by not one but two deranged psychos in the form of Felix Walters and Sarah Lewis, had a nervous breakdown and was wrongly imprisoned for accidentally running over her rapist. Dani was very popular, especially where boys were concerned. From the moment she arrived at the Caravan Park she had boys chasing her all the time. Her first true love was Will Smith. Will and Dani fell in love but were ripped apart by Will's scheming ex Gypsy Nash who he had gotten pregnant. Dani was heartbroken, and, despite Will insisting he still loved her, she sacrificed her own happiness so he could be a father.
She soon fell for rich lifeguard Josh West, who fell in love with her almost instantly. But his growing ambitions and obsession with money soon made her realise he was not her Mr. Right. Then came a knight in shining armour in the shape of Scott Hunter. An older man who worshipped her, and even helped her forgive her sister Kirsty's betrayal of marrying her rapist Kane, seemed perfect. Dani, a budding writer, was an independent woman so when the chance of a lifetime came her way she grabbed it, but Scott was unhappy and feared he would lose her to handsome publisher Stafford McRae. His insecurities led him to accuse her of having an affair with Stafford. Dani was disgusted by Scott's lack of trust and lack of ambitions in life other than getting married and having kids as soon as possible, so ended there engagement and walked out on him and life in Summer Bay for good in 2004.
Jade was brought up as Kirsty's twin sister and Dani's younger sister. She suffered from low self esteem as she didn't think she was as pretty as Dani or as talented as Kirsty. She developed bullimia as a result. She was soon happy again in a relationship with Nick Smith, who was just as devoted to her as she was to him. They broke up after Angie Russell manipulated him and he was seen cheating on her on a reality TV show.
Nick left the Bay in 2003 after saying an emotional farewell to Jade, and she moved on with Seb Miller. The bombshell that she and Kirsty's real twin, Laura DeGroot, were accidentally swapped at birth shattered her and sent her off the rails. Her horrible ex, Duncan Stewart, drove a car high on drugs with Jade and Seb in over a cliff. The Sutherlands feared Jade was dead. She was washed up some days later.
When Seb decided to move to the city after being disabled in the accident, to live with his grandad Donald Fisher, Jade decide to go with him as she had no family and had been suspended from school. The Sutherlands showed she still had her family if she wanted them, and feeling happier than she had in months she said goodbye to her sisters Dani and Kirsty and left in 2004 for a fresh start in the City.
Rhys Sutherland's nephew, Max, was dumped on his family in 2002 when his dad Pete's gambling debts spiralled out of control and he went on the run. Max was a cheeky kid, and proved to be like the son Rhys never had. He formed a close bond with Colleen Smart and got on well with his aunt, Shelley and cousins, Dani, Kirsty, and Jade. He was also good at moneymaking scams which he had learnt from his father, and these often got him into trouble. The most serious when he was threatened with legal action over a book he wrote and got published, as the material had been stolen off the internet.
He also had his first love in Summer Bay. Despite playing off Tamara and Caitlin against each other he was dumped by both. He later fell for Eloise, who was terminally ill with leukaemia, but she died and left Max so heartbroken that he created a shrine to her in an old abandoned mineshaft. This location turned out not to be such a good place for Max's shrine, as the shaft collapsed in on most of the Sutherlands and it was a race against time to save them. Luckily they all survived. When Rhys and his new wife Beth Hunter split up Max decided he wanted to go to boarding school, and had a farewell party thrown for him by his friends and family before leaving for good in 2004.
Rhys arrived as the new caravan park owner with wife Shelley, and teenage daughters Dani, Kirsty and Jade in tow. His family suffered many traumas over the years ranging from his daughter Dani being raped and having a nervous breakdown before being wrongly imprisoned, his marriage being destroyed by Angie Russell, his other daughter Kirsty's betrayal by marrying Dani's rapist and the discovery that Jade was not his or Shelley's actual daughter and had been swapped at birth with their real daughter. These traumas pushed him apart from his second wife Beth Hunter and back to Shelley. Rhys left the Bay to be with her after saying an emotional goodbye to his daughters in 2004.
A counsellor and mother to three pretty daughters was a tough job, but Shelley remained the strong reliable one when her husband, Rhys, would fly off the handle, and enjoyed a good relationship with her daughters Dani, Kirsty, and Jade and nephew Max. She left Rhys in 2002 after discovering he had cheated on her in the past with unhinged Angie Russell. She returned for further stints in the show when he family was in trouble, and left for good in 2004 when Rhys broke up with his second wife Beth Hunter to be with her again.

Hunter family

  • Katherine "Kit" Hunter (Amy Mizzi, 2003-2004) Episodes: 3495-3670; 3719-3737; 3817-3878.
The elder daughter of Beth Hunter, Kit first appeared as a regular character in 2003 in episode 3495 as an alcoholic young woman seeking help at the drop-in centre. She met Noah Lawson and he was one of the people who helped her deal with her drinking problems, while she fell in love with him. But nothing really developed and in early 2004, she left Summer Bay to go to university. Although Kit was only on the show for a year, she became somewhat of a fan favorite with viewers. In so, Kit has returned to Summer Bay, the soap opera's fictional town, a number of times since and has had a romantic relationship with Kim Hyde. She'll be making a 7-week return in the 2006 season.
Henry arrived from boarding school with twin sister Matilda to live at the caravan park with his family and new step family the Sutherlands. He came across as rude due to his obvious resentment of his new home and refusal to speak to anyone from his new family. He and Matilda caused chaos by refusing to settle in to their new surroundings, instead choosing to make their annoyance known to everyone. He clashed with Max Sutherland over his bond with Beth, but the two eventually made their peace before Max left. Henry also got involved with Ric Dalby and even had to take the blame for trashing the kiosk after being intimidated by Ric and Wazza into keeping them out of it. Henry had little sympathy when Ric was in the frame for killing his abusive father and remained his enemy when he moved back to the bay permanently. He was horrified to discover that Ric had been getting close to Matilda who had decided to give him a second chance. Henry tried to destroy the blossoming friendship between Ric and Matilda, but came to be friends with Ric himself after weeks of arguing about him with Matilda. Henry left the bay to take a part in a show at boarding school, after his sister convinced him to go after she was abducted by Terry Rawlings.
Scott arrived in the Bay as Prince Charming on a white horse on the beach, ready to whisk Dani Sutherland off her feet. Scott and Dani became an official couple and Scott became Alf Stewart's partner on the Blaxland. He was later joined by his alcoholic sister Kit, mother Beth plus younger brothers Robbie and Henry and little sister Matilda. Scott and Dani had many problems during the course of their relationship, but obviously loved each other. Scott remained her tower of strength during her numerous troubles and tragedies whereas she tried to make him more of a free spirit. When ambitious Dani was offered the chance of a lifetime, Scott feared she would slip away from him and his dream of marrying her would disappear. His insecurity over her relationship with publisher Stafford McRae boiled over and he forced Dani to choose btween him and her career. Realising that she would never be the perfect wife Scott wanted, Dani broke off their engagement and walked out on him and life in Summer Bay to move back to the city. A depressed and heartbroken Scott turned to drink to drown his sorrows until sister Kit gave him a wake up call. In just a few weeks Scott was in love with Hayley Lawson. The relationship faltered and after a long drawn out paternity gate with rival Kim Hyde, as well as a relationship with scheming Amanda Vale, the two reunited and left the Bay together with baby Noah in 2005.

Others

Flynn first arrived in the bay, as a young counsellor ready and willing to help Shelley Sutherland out at the drop in centre. It was revealed a few weeks after that he was also a trained doctor who proved to be very useful in the hectic lives of the Summer Bay residents. He often acted as a ‘go between’ between the hospital doctors and patients of the bay.
It was actually his own family issues that made Flynn turn from a doctor to a counsellor, when his younger sister left home to be on the streets. While out searching for her, he realised what so many young people go through, and realised that he had what it takes to become a counsellor. Since being in the bay people have seen just how well he connects with the youngsters, and helps many of them to overcome their battles.
Flynn is now married to long time love Sally Fletcher (Kate Ritchie) and they are running the Summer Bay Caravan Park. In 2004, they welcomed the arrival of their first child, Pippa (Tameka and Bojana Main) and in 2005 they took in homeless teenagers Ric Dalby (Mark Furze) and Cassandra 'Cassie' Turner (Sharni Vinson) who they are now raising as their own.
In 2005 Flynn found out he has only three months to live due to cancer in the brain and other vital organs. After deciding against chemotherapy, Flynn faced a tough moment when he told Sally that he wanted to take his own life, in order to save himself the pain and humiliation of dying a slow death. Finally he realised how precious his last few weeks were, and he decided against it, eventually passing away naturally on Valentine's Day, 2006, his devoted and loving wife Sally by his side.
Peta was the mysterious student at Summer Bay High that intrigued her new friends, Will and Hayley Smith. Her home life was complicated and she lived in fear of being put in a home. She lived with her Grandmother and slightly older brother Guy, but her grandmother had passed away and the two were living in the house collecting her benefit money. When this was discovered Guy moved away to get a good job so he could support himself and his sister. Peta was fostered by the Nashes, where she formed a bond with both Joel and Natalie. When the couple broke up Peta chose to stay in Summer Bay but moved in with boyfriend Edward Dunglass, much to his mother Judith's annoyance. The two were deadly serious about their relationship and held a special ceremony in which they married. Edward's health was a ticking time bomb so the young couple left Summer Bay to travel the world before it was too late.
Probably Irene Roberts' best known foster daughter was Selina. The two women shared a very close mother-daughter bond which was cemented by Selina changing her surname to Roberts. Selina was lively, warm hearted teenager with troubles. These ranged from getting pregnant and having a miscarriage to joining a cult. This was also combined with trouble with men. Her relationship with teacher Steven was controversial and resulted in her being kidnapped on her wedding day to him by cult leader Saul. Another relationship that had it's ups and downs was with bad boy Jesse McGregor. This relationship ended in heartbreak as well after Jesse cheated on her with her best friend Chloe Richards. Selina left Summer Bay to live with first love Steven in London and is often still mentioned by Irene and remains a viewers favourite.
Tiegan arrived as a fiery new foster child of Pippa Ross. Her wild child nature, short temper and obvious frustration with life made her quite a handful. Sam Marshall tried to oust her from the caravan Park, but met his match and was forced to move out himself. It turned out that Tiegan's frustration stemmed to the fact that she could not read. When Joey Rainbow offered to help teach her, romance blossomed between them. She also struck up a strong friendship with foster sister Justine Welles. After two years in Summer Bay, Tiegan and the other foster kids learned Pippa was leaving for a new life and asked each individually if they wanted to go with her. Tiegan longed for a family and so agreed to go with her and left Summer Bay behind.
Zoe made a quiet splash in 2005 as the new nurse in Summer Bay. She was nice, helpful, and seemingly innocent. But unknown to the residents of Summer Bay, she was really Eve Jacobsen, the girlfriend of the deceased Sarah Lewis, and she was hellbent on avenging her death. Eve had murdered the real Zoe McAllister and stolen her identity. 'Zoe'/Eve secretly caused trouble for many residents, from the Palace fire, to the plane crash, to murdering Marc Edwards at the murder mystery party.
  • Roberta 'Bobby' Simpson/Morgan/Marshall (Nicolle Dickson), 1988-1993, 1995. (Pilot-1304)

PARENTS - Donald Fisher and Morag Bellingham. Al and Doris Simpson(adopted). Fostered by Tom and Pippa Fletcher, then Alf and Ailsa Stewart. SIBLINGS - Alan and Rebecca Fisher (Half; different mothers - also cousins!); Sophie Simpson (adopted half - daughter of Al and a mistress). SPOUSES - Frank Morgan (1988-90); Greg Marshall (1992-3). CHILDREN - Sam Nicholls / Marshall (fostered in 1991; adopted as a stepson in 1992).

Bobby was Summer Bay's original teen wildchild and tomboy. Stubborn and no-nonsense but with a cheeky attitude and warm heart, Roberta Simpson was born in secret to Morag Bellingham and Donald Fisher in 1970 and illegally adopted by the vile Al Simpson and his long-suffering wife, Doris. Only Martha Stewart knew the identity of both mother and child and only Al, Martha and Doris knew that Bobby was even adopted. With her mother dying when she was 13 and her father ending up in jail not long after, Bobby was left to stand alone in a world that seemingly hated her (even her grandparents rejected her), with Donald Fisher as its leader. Eventually, she was expelled from school and things looked very bleak.
However, two sources of help were soon at Bobby's aid, ex-con Ailsa Hogan and Alf Stewart, and when the Fletchers arrived in Summer Bay in 1987 and fostered Bobby, things started looking up for once. She went back to school, mellowed a little and found love with Tom and Pippa's original foster child, Frank. She came in the top 10% in her HSC and when Frank started to notice what a great girl Bobby was and finished with the scheming Roo, Bobby was in her element, with the two marrying a couple of months later and Ailsa giving Bobby a 50 /50 share in the new cafe she had created - The Bayside Diner. She then found out about her adoption and after research into her past, she found out that her real parents were Morag Bellingham, a cold and manipulative woman and Donald Fisher, her former worst enemy. Whilst she despised Morag, she was embraced by Donald and the two, within a year, had formed an extremely close bond, which Bobby threw herself into on her separation with Frank (and making the success of the diner, as well as maintaining very close relationships with the Fletchers and the Stewarts, of course). She proved herself to be a good little business woman and developed into a caring, yet tough and self-aware (Bobby had lived through hardship and was no fool) pillar of the community. All that she needed now was a family of her own to provide for. She came close after getting pregnant to a married man she met through a dating agency (Chris Reynolds) but suffered a miscarriage, so fostered a seven-year-old boy, Sam Nicholls. The two became family and so when Sam's dad, Greg Marshall, arrived on the scene after tracking his son down, Bobby, as usual, put up a fight to keep him. But there was more - they were in love. After a few problems, notably Frank returning and begging Bobby for another chance (she turned him down), the two married and Bobby, as she had always wanted, was part of a real family, with a Dad, two surrogate Mums (in the form of Pippa and Ailsa), an Uncle (Alf), a husband and a son, as well as younger siblings in the form of Pippa's foster kids and school bully Tug. Then Greg cheated on her - Bobby broke down; once again she had been betrayed. But this time, she didn't let her pride and stubbornness stand in the way of true happiness and gave Greg another chance. But, three days later, Bobby was seriously injured in a freak boating accident and died, aged 23, a week later. All her life, Bobby had been fighting and when she finally had won, fate took its toll.
