John Backus, American computer scientist.

Backus, who joined IBM in 1950, is the inventor of FORTRAN (the first high level programming language), the Backus Naur Form (BNF, the de facto standard notation used to describe the syntax of programming languages), FP and FL (the first function-level programming languages, which encourage a variable-less approach to mathematical programming). He significantly contributed to the developement of ALGOL, the first structured algorithmic programming language.
