Heaven, from Old English heofon, originally "sky", possibly from Proto-Germanic *khemina- from a PIE base *kem-/*kam- "to cover" (cf. Varuna).

In mythology, religion and philosophy:

  • Heaven — an afterlife concept found in many religions or spiritual philosophies
  • the heavens refers to the sky, in particular the clear (starry) night sky, or the planetary spheres; the plural use is probably from the Ptolemaic theory spheres, but it was also formerly used in the same sense as the singular in Biblical language, translating of Hebrew plural shamayim.
