Årstad, Bergen

Template:Infobox Bydel Årstad is a borough of the city of Bergen, Norway. It is located south of the city centre, with a population of around 33,300.

Årstad was a municipality on its own until 1915, when it was included in the city of Bergen.

Etymology

During the early Viking ages a king of Norway had a farm at the foot of Ulriken (a mountain in Bergen, Norway) called Álreksstaðir (Alrekstad). It is believed (ref. Norsk Stadnamnleksikon) that the name Álreksstaðir is derived from Ulriken rather than the name Alrekr.

The name Årstad is probably an abbreviation of the word Alrekstad. Strangely, Alrekstad (included in, but not limited to, the place now called Årstadvollen) is not a part of the borough of Årstad.
