Adam Hepburn, Master of Hailes was the son of Sir Patrick Hepburn. He was involved in the seizure of King James II at Linlithgow on July 9, 1466, for which he was granted remission for from Parliament on October 13, 1466. He became Sheriff of Berwick, but died before his father, meaning the title of Lord of Hailes was passed on to his son Patrick, who also became the 1st Earl of Bothwell.

He and his wife, Elyne had four other children, Adam, George, Margaret and Elizabeth.
