List of Castlevania characters

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Guermantes (talk | contribs) at 19:30, 14 May 2006 (graves is not identified as a belmont). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Listed below are characters from all of the Castlevania video game series. All lists are sorted in chronological order of storyline in the Castlevania series. A lot of the information on this page was added with the help of Castlevania Dungeon.

The Belmont family (sometimes translated as Belmondo or Belmond) is the bloodline sworn to oppose Count Dracula in the Castlevania the series. They are not the only heroes in the franchise, but often play an integral role in any game's storyline. The Belmont surname was lost to some characters due to the European patrilineal naming tradition. If not Belmonts in name, they were certainly Belmonts by blood and conviction, and are accordingly considered part of the Belmont clan. Most, though not all, of these characters wield a holy whip called Vampire Killer as their primary weapon.

Other main characters

The following characters are not members of the Belmont family, but they have each lent a hand to the fight against the darkness, and should be noted for their deeds. The women on this list are all members of the Belnades family line, a group of powerful mages, who frequently fight against Dracula, but not as frequently as the Belmonts. The following are all non-Belmont characters who are playable.

While not exactly an official Castlevania character, the Kid Dracula character shares many similarities with the Castlevania series. While he is speculated to be a younger version of Alucard, the tone of the Kid Dracula game is more focused on comedy, being very distant from the Castlevania universe.

The following characters can be found in the games, but they aren't playable and are there simply to drive the story along.

The villains

The Castlevania games have always had a single focus on a single character as the main antagonist. That villain is none other than the Count Dracula. While not the main villain of all the Castlevania games, Dracula has played a role in every one. He is the source of evil, and the reason that the heroes fight in the Castlevania series.

At the end of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, the game that told the origins of the Castlevania series, it is revealed that a man named Mathias Cronqvist would later name himself the King of all Vampires and he would not encounter the Belmonts for hundreds of years later, so it is implied that he is Dracula. But in a later game, Dracula addresses himself as Vlad Dracula Tepes III, the actual name of the historical man who inspired the character of Dracula in the novel of the same name, written by Bram Stoker.

There has yet to be a game in the series that explains this problem in continuity. Some believe that the Dracula in the later games possibly inherited the mantle of Mathias Cronqvist and that Cronqvist never actually called himself Dracula, though this was proven false. The Japanese version of Lament of Innoncence's ending specifically said that Mathias changed his name to Dracula. This was confirmed by IGA in the official Dawn of Sorrow strategy guide. Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, and their star Soma Cruz, suggest that Dracula, when defeated, can either be reborn as someone else or his power will inhabit another human. (Which of these theories is correct is disputed.) It is possible that Mathias was either reborn as Tepes, or the power of Dracula possessed Tepes, depending of which of these interpretations of Soma's existence you subscribe too. There is an open gap of nearly 400 years between the first two Castlevania games in the Castlevania timeline so it is possible that later games will clear this up.

Despite being the primary villain of the series, his role is often rather passive, and he simply waits in his castle, letting his minions do most of the work for him. His appearance and behavior varies from game to game, but a few common threads exist. Primarily, he often has two forms, the second revealing itself after he has taken enough damage. His weak point in his human form is often his head.

Monsters in Castlevania

The Castlevania series features a large variety of monsters from classic horror fiction, films, fantasy, and mythology. For more details on the appearances of these creatures in the Castlevania games, see the aforementioned Castlevania Dungeon. It is worth noting that while the bulk of these names come from European sources, the list also includes creatures from Latin America and Asia, making the series a kind of multicultural monster collection.
