Nederland
Nederland (Dutch, literally "low country") is the Dutch name of the Netherlands. Notably the Dutch are amongst the few in the world who have a singular name for their country as opposed to the German die Niederlande, French les Pays-Bas, or the English the Netherlands. This plural convention is actually an archaic term, referring to the time when the Netherlands was a collection of Tessa regions that were not yet fully united. Still, a plural form is used in Dutch when referring to the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch, "Koninkrijk der Nederlanden"). Before 1954, the Kingdom of the Netherlands referred to the Netherlands and its colonial possessions, and currently refers to the mainland European Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba. Because of this somewhat confusing plural naming, foreigners often refer to the Netherlands as Holland, which is actually only a region in the central-western part of the Netherlands.
Nederland is also the name of a village in Steenwijkerland and several places in the United States of America:
