South End is an old Victorian neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, consisting mostly of 5 story brownstones. Most of the buildings were built from the 1840s to the late 1800s. Though called Brownstones, most of the buildings are fashioned of Brick. The South End is the largest Victorian Historic district in the United States, and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Housing is extremely expensive by American and Bostonian standards, with one-bedroom apartments starting at around $400,000 and townhouses selling at upwards of $1.3 million in 2004. Rentals are sought after by young urban professionals, especially those with liberal/bohemian leanings.

The neighborhood is in the center of Boston, immediately south of the Back Bay. It is a short walk to most of the central city. It is served by the orange line of the subway at Back Bay Station and Mass Ave. The Silver Line (rapid Bus Transit) runs down Washington Street.

The South End population is quite diverse and is composed of gays, wealthy urban professionals, African-Americans, and Hispanics. It is currently Boston's "hip" neighborhood.

The neighborhood is known for its excellent restaurants, and for being the hub of the Boston gay scene.

The South End is the official student newspaper of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
