The Races of Europe is a book written by Harvard anthropologist Carleton Stevens Coon. It focuses on the history of different "white" racial types from thousand of years and draws conclusions from observations in the morphology of individuals. It is an attempt to tax the different groups of "whites" in a conclusive manner as well as to speculate on the history and origins of different cultures and types.

Conclusions

The conclusions from the book entail the following:

1) The "White" race is of dual origin consisting of Upper Paleolithic (mixture of sapiens and neandertals) types and Mediterranean (purely sapiens) types.

2) The Upper Paleolithic peoples are the truly indigenous peoples of Europe.

3) Mediterraneans invaded Europe in large numbers during the Neolithic and settled there.

4) The racial situation in Europe today may be explained as a mixture of Upper Paleolithic survivors and Mediterraneans.

5) When reduced Upper Paleolithic survivors and Mediterraneans mix, occurs the process of dinarization which produces an hybrid with non-intermediate features.

6) The "White" race extends well beyond Europe into the Middle East, the Far East and even North Africa.

7) The Nordic race is part of the Mediterranean racial stock being a mixture of Corded and Danubian Mediterraneans.

Value

The Races of Europe represents the first and perhaps the only successful attempt to develop a consistent and conclusive system of classification among European types. The work is not only incredibly consistent, but also brillant when compared to its predecessors. It puts together a puzzle that seemed impossible to resolve. Many people use it to learn about physical anthropology and identify their own type such as to know, for instance, which part of their ancestry they take after. The work has gained popularity in recent years and it stands as the best of its kind. It is said to be avaiable online although for copyright reasons the link is not given here. A website entitled Racial Reality, however, covers some of its fundamental aspects. The Society for Nordish Physical Anthropology was founded in 1999 with the intention of revitalizing racial studies of nortern european peoples and is largely based on Coon's work.

Illyrians as Dorians

Carleton S. Coon found a connection between the Illyrians and the Dorians based on his anthropological analyses of the Montenegrin population and the Sfakian population in Crete. Coon discovered that Montenegro is a highly concentrated Illyrian racial zone and that the Sfakians are directly descended from Doric tribes that invaded Crete from the direction of Macedonia and Illyria. Moreover, he discovered that Montenegrins and Sfakians shared many similarities in stature, appearance, language, national costume, belligerent tendencies, tribal orders, and vendettas.
