List of Naruto summons
In the anime and manga series, Naruto, summons are powerful entities conjured up by the user to aid him in battle or to perform a technique that the summoner cannot perform as easily by himself.
Typically called forth with Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Summoning Technique), the user makes contact with the being and calls it forth into battle, sacrificing a bit of his own blood in the process. An enormous reservoir of chakra is required to summon a creature of notable strength, but they provide an invaluable advantage in battle. Summons have their own abilities that they can use by themselves or in conjunction with the summoner. Some summons are so powerful that they may even challenge the summoner, or will demand something in order to contribute to the battle.
Summons
Doki
Name: Doki, 怒鬼, "Angry Demons"
Affiliation: Otogakure (Hidden Sound)
Summoner: Tayuya
The Doki are three demons summoned by Tayuya. She uses her flute and Mateki: Genbusō Kyoku (Demon Flute: Illusionary Warriors Manipulating Melody) to control them.
Enkōō: Enma
Name: Enkōō: Enma, 猿猴王・猿魔, "Monkey King: Enma"
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Sandaime Hokage
Seiyu: Hiroshi Naka
Signature Ability: Henge: Kongōnyoi (Transformation: Adamantine Staff), Kongō Rōheki (Adamantine Prison Wall)
Enma is the personal summon of the Third Hokage and king of the monkeys. He possesses great physical strength and fighting ability, and is fiercely loyal to Sarutobi. In addition, Enma is capable of transforming himself into a large staff as hard as diamond, in which he can elongate at will.
Enma was summoned during the battle with Orochimaru to even the odds against the deceased First and Second Hokage, now Orochimaru's minions due to Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei (Summoning: Impure World Resurrection).
Enma (and his weapon form) bears resemblance to Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of classical Chinese literature Journey to the West.
Gama Family
Gama
Name: Gama, 蝦蟇
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf )
Summoner: Jiraiya
A mid-level toad that Jiraiya uses to defeat Ebisu (because he annoyed him) at the hot springs. He later uses a samurai version of one to deflect Kisame's attack on Naruto when they are beginning their search for Tsunade.
Gamabunta
Name: Gamabunta, ガマブン太
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf )
Summoners: Fourth Hokage, Jiraiya, Uzumaki Naruto
Seiyu: Takeshi Watabe
Signature Ability: Giant Dosu, Suiton: Teppōdama (Water Release: Gunshot), Gama Dosuzan (Toad Sword Beheading), Konbi Henge (Combination Transformation) (with Uzumaki Naruto), Katon: Gamayu Endan (Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet) (with Jiraiya)
Gamabunta is the boss of the toads that are summoned. He is huge (about 100 meters high) and is summoned for battles with the biggest of enemies. Uzumaki Naruto can summon him with his Kyūbi chakra (whereas at first with his own, he is only capable of summoning up tadpoles or some of Gamabunta's small children). Naruto first summoned him in the month long training session with Jiraiya when Jiraiya pushed him over a cliff in order to induce life-threatening fear in Naruto so that the Kyūbi chakra could come out.
Gamabunta is a grumpy and highly apathetic character. He doesn't like to take orders from anyone unless the summoner is highly talented and earns his respect. Jiraiya and the Yondaime Hokage are few of those people whom he allows them to ride on top of his head without question (Although Jiraiya admits that he can't completely control Gamabunta). He uses some Japanese words that only a yakuza gangster would use. Still, he is portrayed as an ultimately powerful and positive force.
When Naruto first summoned Gamabunta, the Toad Boss didn't believe a little kid like Naruto could summon him. Naruto, angry at this comment, claimed that, as the Gamabunta's summoner, he was the toad's master. This, in turn, made Gamabunta lose his patience with Naruto and threatened to kill him. The angry Gamabunta scared Naruto into submission and, after Naruto apologized, Gamabunta accepted him as a subordinate. Although Gamabunta didn't believe that Naruto summoned him until he saw the contract scroll left behind by Jiraiya. It's not until then that Gamabunta is really impressed by Naruto, claiming that no-one has ridden on his head since the Yondaime. Gamabunta then takes Naruto, exhausted because of the summoning, to the hospital, leaving his footprint as a signature. In the anime, Naruto demanded to be recognized as Gamabunta's master if he could ride the toad until sundown. Naruto showed his great resilient spirit and almost made it. Regardless, Gamabunta was impressed.
In the next summoning, Naruto is almost killed by Gaara's Sabaku Sōsō (Imploding Sand Funeral) attack when he performs the Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Summoning Technique). Gaara is in his full form of Shukaku (although he has not gone to sleep yet). Gamabunta is his usual grumpy self, and shares a dialog with Naruto about the fact that he promised to have a subordinate/mentor relationship with him but only after sharing sake ceremony (which of course is 8 years away because Naruto isn't old enough to drink yet, and wouldn't be of any good use to Naruto here and now in the current battle). At which point, Gamakichi tells his father that Gaara bullied him and that Naruto saved him. Gamabunta, who is fiercely protective of his kin, was very impressed with Naruto, that not only does he officially accepts him as his subordinate, but also tells Naruto he will show him all about "Jingi" which is another yakuza term describing a highly argumentative honor code (although it’s portrayed as a completely positive thing in this anime).
In the next summoning, while harmed by Tsunade's poison, Jiraiya, after summoning Gamakichi, finally collects his chakra focus and brings out Gamabunta for battle against Orochimaru's snake, Manda. It indicates that Gamabunta hates Manda's guts and would love to just cut into him. He seems to have respect for Katsuyu, Tsunade's summon, as he rescued her from Manda. His next summon was in the filler arc against Umibozu the Sea Boss during the Sea Country Filler Arc. He got angry at Naruto because he wasn't adaptable in saltwater and it would dry him out quickly.
Overall, despite his grumpy exterior, he shows respect towards Naruto as if he were a son. He even explained to Jiraiya that he's aware of Naruto's talents. There's indication that despite Jiraiya having trouble controlling him, they seem to be good friends and, as implied in the series, drinking buddies. However, on occasion he will scold him.
Gamakichi
Name: Gamakichi, ガマ吉
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf )
Summoner: Uzumaki Naruto, Jiraiya
Seiyu: Youji Ueda
Gamakichi is the minuscule and cute child of Gamabunta about the size of Naruto's head. He is a weak creature summoned because Naruto could not focus his chakra during the beginning of the battle with Gaara. Gamakichi always wants to play with Naruto for summoning him. In addition, like Pakkun, he's a coward. However, he is intelligent enough (more so than Gamatatsu) to be aware of the situation around him that at one point, he helps persuade Gamabunta to help Naruto during the battle against Gaara. He was summoned again by Jiraiya while fighting Orochimaru because Tsunade intentionally poisoned Jiraiya with a chakra-disrupting potion.
He was summoned again by Jiraiya for a scouting mission during the Orochimaru's Lair arc, as well as by Naruto during the Noroimusha and Sea Country arcs. Note that these events happened only in the Naruto anime, so they're generally not seen as canon.
Gamatatsu
Name: Gamatatsu, ガマ竜
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Uzumaki Naruto
Seiyu: Tomo Shigematsu
The weak, inexperienced younger brother of Gamakichi, and son of Gamabunta. Summoned for the first time by Naruto while fighting Orochimaru because he was unable to call on his Kyūbi chakra. Fixates on snacks after a comment made by Gamakichi that made him think he'd get one. His name literally translates as "Toad Dragon". Gamatatsu was also summoned by Naruto during the events of the Bird country and the Noroimusha. Gamatatsu accidentally stumbled upon the black kites that the Noroimusha was using to appear as if floating like a ghost in the middle of the night. His personality overall is extremely dense. He's always getting into trouble to the point his older brother has to drag him from danger.
Kamatari
Name: Kamatari, カマタリ
Summoner: Temari
Affiliation: Sunagakure (Hidden Sand)
This weasel holds a huge sickle with which it can cause a lot of destruction very fast. It sliced down an entire forest where Tayuya was hiding in, and Tayuya herself, in about 10 seconds. This mysterious weasel is only seen when he first appears. It is summoned by Temari with Kuchiyose: Kirikiri Mai (Summoning: Quick Beheading Dance).
Trivia
- This weasel is a Kamaitachi (鎌鼬, "Cutting weasel"). This is the same name as Temari's Kamaitachi no Jutsu (Cutting Whirlwind Technique). It comes from the phenomenon wherein people claim to have been knocked down by a great gust of wind only to find they have been cut. Some say they have seen weasels wielding sickles that attack in groups knocking a person down and cutting them, even occasionally healing a wound so that they can attack again.
Katsuyu
Name: Katsuyu, カツユ
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Tsunade, Haruno Sakura **
Seiyu: Mamiko Noto
Signature Ability: Katsuyu Daibunretsu (Slug Great Division), Zesshi Nensan (Tongue Tooth Sticky Acid)
Katsuyu is the giant slug summoned by Tsunade. Compared to Gamabunta and Manda, the summons of Jiraiya and Orochimaru, respectively, Katsuyu is quiet and more subservient to her Sannin master. She has the ability to create mini clones; as well as separate and reassemble.
Note** It stands to reason that Sakura can also be counted among Katsuyu's summoners, as she has learned nearly every other known skill of her master Tsunade. Sakura has been refrenced many times in Naruto II as having potentialy greater Chakra control than Tsunade, which is key to Tsunade and Sakura's monstrous strength ability and Summoning.
Kyodaigumo
Name: Kyodaigumo, 巨大蜘蛛, "Giant Spider"
Affiliation: Otogakure (Hidden Sound)
Summoner: Kidōmaru
This giant spider is the personal summon of Kidōmaru.
===Kyodaija===
Name: Kyodaijya, 巨大蛇, "Giant Snake"
Affiliation: Otogakure (Hidden Sound)
Summoner: Orochimaru, Mitarashi Anko (anime only)
These are giant snakes, often summoned by Orochimaru during battle. There are many different kinds of Kyodaija. For instance, the three Kyodaija that were summoned during the invasion of Konoha had marks on their skin, similar to the Ten no Juin (Cursed Seal of Heaven).
Manda
Name: Manda, マンダ
Affiliation: Otogakure (Hidden Sound)
Summoner: Orochimaru, Uchiha Sasuke **
Manda is one of the largest and most powerful summons of Orochimaru. He demands an abundant amount of hundreds of human sacrifices ready for after his help in combat. But however, if the person who summoned him isn't Orochimaru himself, Manda will simply not help at all, and will kill the person who called for him to fight. Some of his greatest abilities include his unbelievable speed, and the fact that he is able to shed his skin as a use of a Kawarimi no Jutsu (Change of Body Technique). He has a very poor disposition, and there's indication that he doesn't like either Gamabunta or Katsuyu, and only savors to kill the both of them. After the Jiraiya and Tsunade teamup fight, Manda discloses to Orochimaru and Kabuto that he will most definitely eat them the next time he is summoned.
Manda also happens to be the name of a Giant Dragon from the old movie Atragon who destroyed cities much like Gojira. He was later introduced into the Godzilla monster list in Destroy All Monsters.
Note **It is also said that Sasuke may be another summoner of Manda, hinting the time he spent with Orochimaru.
Ninkame
Name: Ninkame, 忍亀, "Ninja Tortoise"
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Maito Gai
Manga Debut: volume 5, chapter 37
A large red tortoise, Ninkame is Maito Gai's summon. He also watches over Rock Lee when Gai isn't around. He hasn't been seen since episode 22.
Ninken
Name: Ninken, 忍犬, "Ninja Dogs"
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Hatake Kakashi
These are the eight dogs Kakashi summons, mostly for tracking purposes, such as when he needed to find Sasuke and Naruto during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. He can summon them separately, as he does with Pakkun, or together. He can also summon them for special purposes like he does with his Kuchiyose: Doton: Tsuiga no Jutsu (Summoning: Earth Release: Tracking Fang Technique), which he used to track down the rendered Momochi Zabuza and immobilize him in the mist while they were battling on what Tazuna would later call 'The Great Naruto Bridge'.
Pakkun
Name: Pakkun, パックン
Affiliation: Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf)
Summoner: Hatake Kakashi
Seiyu: Shinichi Kotani
One of Kakashi's Ninken (Ninja Dogs). Pakkun is seemingly the most intelligent of the Ninken, and has the ability to speak. In the anime, he reveals that he uses the same shampoo as Sakura, Floral Green (in which Sakura is comically traumatized at the thought of using the same shampoo as a dog).
Also in accordance to the anime, Pakkun was able to say Kakashi's name at four months of age. This implies that Kakashi's Nin dogs may have been all raised from at least a young age by Kakashi.
Trivia
- The face shaped design on the back of his shirt is referred to as Henohenomoheji (へのへのもへじ), which is the sound made when all the characters in the face are put together. Appropriately enough, children use this design as the face for their Kakashi or scarecrows.
Umibozu
Name: Umibōzu, 海坊主
Affiliation: Unknown, possibly: Orochimaru
Summoner: Amachi
Amachi used this summon to terrorize the Sea Country. It was defeated by Uzumaki Naruto, with the help of Gamabunta. Umibōzu itself is nothing more than water that has been gathered and held together by chakra and the Summoning Technique. However, that means it is virtually indestructible, unless it is completely evaporated.
Umibōzu is named after a legendary Japanese sea monster.
Trivia
- Strangely, some (if not all) summons wear headbands. It is unknown (except in the cases of the Shodai Hokage and Nidaime Hokage) how they became what some might strangely call the title of "ninja".
