Yellowstone County is a county located in the U.S. state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 129,352. As of 2004, the population is estimated to be around 136,717. Projections to 2025 show an estimated population of 170,088, a growth of 32 percent. Its county seat is Billings6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,861 km² (2,649 mi²). 6,825 km² (2,635 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 129,352 people, 52,084 households, and 34,219 families residing in the county. The population density was 19/km² (49/mi²). There were 54,563 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.78% White, 0.45% Black or African American, 3.05% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 3.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 52,084 households out of which 31.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.30% were non-families. 27.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $36,727, and the median income for a family was $45,277. Males had a median income of $33,475 versus $21,566 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,303. 11.10% of the population and 8.50% of families were below the poverty line. 14.50% of those under the age of 18 and 7.40% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
