Phi Slama Jama
Phi Slamma Jamma was the nickname given to the University of Houston's Cougar basketball team from 1982 to 1984. This team was coached by the legendary Guy V. Lewis. They were especially known for their dunking skills and getting the ball to the basket in a hurry. The name was coined by Tommy Bonk, a writer for the Houston Post newspaper. However, they were also well known for their poor free throw shooting.
The team lost a close championship game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack in 1983, by a score of 54-52. The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Cougars in a championship game the next year.
The team included:
- Benny Anders
- Clyde "The Glide" Drexler
- Eric Dickens
- Bryan Williams
- Derek Giles
- Gary Orsak
- David Bunce
- Dan Bunce
- Renaldo Thomas
- Alvin Franklin
- Reid "Spot" Gettys
- Larry "Mr. Mean" Micheaux
- Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon
- Michael Young
- Dave Rose
- Rob Williams
In 1995, Olajuwon & Drexler later reunited on the Houston Rockets team when Drexler was traded from the Portland Trail Blazers. The Rockets went on to win the second of their back-to-back NBA championships and earned Houston the nickname "Clutch City".
