- His father war Sir Henry Clinton (1732–1795) a British General in the American War of Independence
- His grandfather was Admiral George Clinton (royal governor) (1686-1761)
- 1810 Promoted major-general,
- 1811 he returned to the Peninsula to fill a divisional command under Duke of Wellington.
- 1812 During the Battle of Salamanca, his division played a notable part in the capture of the forts.
- 1813 given the local rank of lieutenant general.
For his conduct at Vitoria he was made a K.B., and he took his part in the subsequent victories of the Nive, Orthes and Toulouse. At the end of the Peninsula War he was made a lieutenant general and inspector-general of infantry.
- 1815 During the Battle of Waterloo he commanded a division.
- 1829 December 11 he died.
