Leslie Ash
Leslie Ash (born 19 February 1960) is a British actress best known for playing Deborah in the sitcom Men Behaving Badly. She started out as a model and is sister of Hot Gossip dancer Debbie Ash. She attended the Italia Conti stage school and recently has taken several "serious" dramatic roles. She was born in Clapham, London.
Her first major film role was in Quadrophenia (1979), a film about Mods and Rockers in the sixties. In 1983 she appeared as Nancy in the ITV situation comedy The Happy Apple playing a secretary whose opinions successfully reflected public opinion. Nicky Henson also starred.
She played Deborah in the long running and successful "Men Behaving Badly" situation comedy.
She is married to former footballer Lee Chapman. It has often been claimed in the tabloid press that he physically abuses her on a regular basis. Such reports are lent some credibility by the apparently frequent visits to hospital Ash has made. Chapman was once photographed leaving a Marbella Night Club with a young model, and is rumoured to have entertained several torrid love affairs. Ash was also featured in the press when overly-successful collagen injections to increase the size of her lips left her with what the tabloid press described as "trout pout". Ash made a media gaff when she was quoted as saying (in response to criticism about her lips) that "Heather Mills only has one leg and people don't talk about that". People were quick to point out that, unlike Ash, Mills did not go into hospital asking to have a leg taken off.
In June 2004, it was announced that an MRSA infection may have rendered her permanently unable to walk. She contracted the infection while recovering from a rib injury, which was reported to have been sustained in sex with her husband. In late August Ash was seen taking some steps with the assistance of crutches.
Ash appeared on the British Soap Awards in May, 2006. She was walking unaided, but she was still clearly impared, over two years after her illness.
Ash now calls for cleaner hospitals as a result of her experiences and regularly addresses audiences of healthcare officials on the subject.
