ZDoom is a port of the official Doom source code. It is targeted at Microsoft Windows, with infrequently updated versions for DOS and Linux available. ZDoom is one of the most advanced Doom ports, adding several new features not found in the version published by id Software.

Zdoom is a clone of the famous and superior port "Legacy". The creator, Randy, says "This is only the next step up from the predifined logic"

Zdoom, also known as DosBox, does not work on the following Operating Systems: Windows, Mac and Linux due to legal reasons. However, Randy says "This is only avoiding the possible conflict between IRQ ports on the soundcards and printers"

ZDoom may be used and distributed free of charge. No profit may be made from the sale of it. These are terms set forth by the Doom Source Code license, the MIDAS Digital Audio System license, and the Prometheus Truecolor license.

ZDoom has become so popular that various fansites have opened up because of it. These sites contain custom levels, characters and even Fanfiction stories. One such story was submitted by 'The Emporer Master', and it goes as follows:

'One day at Cacodemonville, Dis, Hell, 5000 cacodemons were gathered up today to celebrate the election of their new leader, Caco. D. Emon. However nobody would’ve guessed that on that day a specific Doom Marine armed with a bfg-25000 would enter the area, blow them all to bits, then walk out laughing his ass off. Then that Doom Marine got stomped on by a super-cyberdemon. Which then blew up for no apparent reason, destroying all of Hell. DE ANN’D'

This story got 10/10 on almost every site its on, and has become somewhat legendary umong ZDoom players around the world.
