Making a site like WikiFur

hi you may know me from uncyclopedia as Ff but i came to ask you a question. can you give me some tips for creating a site like wikifur? --Whopper 20:02, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the most important thing to do is get people who will help you. To attract them, you will have to do a lot of "seed posting" (possibly anywhere from fifty to over a hundred pages), and the project itself must be of enough interest for them to want to contribute to it. How you do that would depend on the community you choose to provide a wiki for.
It is generally inadvisable to create a wiki for a communtiy that does not exist yet, as then you have to generate the community, which is very hard. The most successeful Wikicities have been those that were "the wiki for fairly popular community X". It helps if the communities have a history of creative endeavour.
MeatballWiki has a useful page about the Wiki life cycle which I think should be mandatory reading for new wiki founders, if only so they have some idea of where they're going. Be sure to read the pages linked from there as well.
I guess another tip is to always remember that your objective should be to create a community that could survive without you. You are the founder, not the Dictator for Life. Besides, it can get awfully tedious if you're the only person doing the admin tasks. :-) GreenReaper 02:06, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hi -- I reverted your edits to this page; sorry. Virtually all of them were changes of single word to near-synonyms, but often they were not phrased as well as the original version, and you broke at least one link. I'd suggest adding new, encyclopedic, important content, or editing things that are really broken, rather than changing someone's words in a way that doesn't add to the page. Thanks. bikeable (talk) 02:46, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Comment

I thank ya for the comment you sent me about Zhao Yun. If you ever want to know more about some of the three kingdoms, check at www.three kingdoms.com/ Although the whole the novel is talking about Cao Cao and Liu Bei at many points, you may overall like it. --Zhang Liao 23:32, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Comment 2

Of course I have played the Dynasty Warriors series, but I have only played DW 4. I haven't had the time to play the others. But from what I have played I understand the time line of how Liu Bei and Cao Cao came into power while the Sun family has been watching over their own lands and territory.

If you are wondering which Kingdom is my favorite, it would have to be the Wu kingdom due to their sense of protection and the generals. --Zhang Liao 02:03, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Battle of Xu Chang

Well there is no real way to say how to beat this stage, but there are many things that you have seen throughout the battle.

As you start off near the lower area of the map where Zhen Ji is, defeat her and Cao Xiu to get the gates open. After a while or so, the seige ramp will appear and head for a certain location. To ensure its survival, all you must do is defeat the officer under Xiahou Dun's command. With the officer of Xiahou Dun dead, the seige ramp will set up as soon as it arrives.

Now the other problem is the base at the back. And as you know the two strategists (Either Zhou Yu or Zhuge Liang) will say that you can only save one of the choices which is the seige ramp or the base at the back. Well whatever they tell you, they are wrong. Both can be saved. After you managed to make sure the seige ramp is safe, if ya got a horse, hustle back there as fast as ya can. By the time you get to the outpost in the back, you should be able to save it and resume your march.

And the general that defeats the message (If you are talking about Si Shui Pass) is Hua Xiong. --Zhang Liao 02:26, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Comment 4

Glad to hear the news and sadly, I have been away for some time. If it is not so much of a bother, could ya tell me the links or web pages that are existing in Wikicity. (If they are there.) --Zhang Liao 19:26, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Support

I see the web pag looks very grand for now, but I will let you and your assistant fix up the web links. Let me know when you and he/she have done that and I will bestow all what I know about DW4 on the link. (I will also add in information from teh novel if need be.)

More or less, I hope this turns out well for you and your partner. Speak with ya soon. --Zhang Liao 05:00, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Support 2

I will also add on the levels on how to beat each one, if you need to have them. Also, I may make a few mistakes so in case I do plz let me know so I can correct them.

I will only add on the stages that some people are struggling with if you need the information instead of the names of the characters.

Moreover, just let me know if any information is needed to the link or if a link needs to be added, I will try to add one on. --70.244.48.92 19:57, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Support 3

Sorry to bother, but whoever is working on the Wu Kingdom walkthrough might want to add the strategy, if any, to the Tale: Yellow Turbans Returns. Other than that, it looks great!

On second thought, since the kingdom of Wei and Shu are the same. just make sure the information is either the same or less. But I leave that up to you. And if ya need any help with Dong Zhuo's walkthrough, plz ask me if need be. --Zhang Liao 03:35, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Support 4

As a small little hint for the Wu walkthrough for the assault on Liu Biao, if you finish that battle up quickly, you will get a massive enemy reinforcements in the next battle when it is Sun Ce and Zhou Yu who are leading the attack.

Also, in the last battle for chapter 3 of Wu, Huang Zu will appear as reinforcements near the bottom as you corner Liu Xun. --Zhang Liao 16:35, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hint from Zhang Liao

As far as the ROTK article being aside from the walkthroughs, sure why not. Might as well put a little bit more effort into this project since we got it this far.

And I never heard of the Lo Kuang Chung nor the five novel series. The only two famous pieces of China's literature that I've heard of is the ROTK and the Outlaws of the Marsh. I've tried to find any web page that covers the Outlaws of the Marsh story and so far I got nothing.

So far it is alright. And we might want to add on the information on how to get the Tales of Wu, Wei, and Shu, (Just in case some people wonder how to get them and if need be.)

Glad to hear that the Wu walkthrough is almost done. I will look at it later while I work on the Wei walkthrough. Most impressive so far! --Zhang Liao 16:02, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

Please do not archive talk pages in the article namespace. I have moved your archive into your userspace. Thanks. --WCQuidditch 16:47, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hint from Zhang Liao 2

Not that I'm complaining, but I think you rushed through some of the information a little too fast. (But that is just a thought.) Might want to look over the work and see what ya typed down. And if we are gonna add on how to get the level 10 weapons for the characters then we will have to add them in the story mode, but this is only a suggestion. --Zhang Liao 20:56, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hint from Zhang Liao 3

So far, everything is good and as for the level 10 weapons, that is entirely up to you since you turned the names into links. More or less, everything should be just fine. --Zhang Liao 04:02, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Report

I've finally added on the last battle for Wei so the Wei walkthrough is done. Other than that, I've do not see any other Walkthrough that needs to be done other than Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu's and of course the Yellow Turbans. --Zhang Liao 06:01, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Liao's Report 3

This offer of such high admin is interesting, but I wouldn't be able to do so. However, I do give thanks to you for giving me such a position; moreover, you can handle it and thanks again for the offer. --Zhang Liao 13:09, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doovinator

Hi Whopper! You asked me what type of banjo I'd recommend for a first-time player--well, four strings are easier to tune than five, fretted is easier than non-fretted, and one with a back is louder than one without, but that's about as far as I'd go with recommendations; it's such a personal thing. Learn to strum a few chords (C-F-G) before trying to use a pick (I don't use finger picks at all, just try to keep my nails longish & rounded on the edge) and once you know a few 3-chord songs put in a break or two here & there. It's easy and really fun to play, enjoy yourself! Doovinator 06:31, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doovinator 2

There's a couple good books out there; I have one called "Bluegrass Banjo" from Oak Publications, and Mel Bay has a line of "You Can Teach Yourself ____" (name one of several instruments) but the one I used most was the little 8-page book that came with my banjo and listed a page full of various chords. The most useful thing to do in my opinion is to get a book of traditional songs (they don't have many complicated chord changes) and notate the places to change from C to F to G. You can fudge your way through just about any song with these 3 chords; if the song is written in a different key just pencil in the chords and key you want to use (all keys will have a predictable progression--C-F-G is the key of C; D-G-A is the key of D and so forth). You can even fudge the chords at first; a C is played with two fingers (in traditional C-G-B-D banjo tuning) and a G with one, but an F requires three. If you don't use your middle finger, you come up with a chord that isn't quite F but will do until you get better. Above all, relax and have fun! Playing a banjo isn't and never should be a chore. If you have trouble with a passage, play it slower, and sing it louder! Doovinator 04:16, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Wossi, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee , KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, Titoxd and FireFox. The elections have ended.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks! - File:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 01:58, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism in progress report

Hi Whopper. I noticed you added an entry to Vandalism in Progress. That page is only for very specific cases, as described by the page's guidelines. Your alert would be better placed on Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), where it will usually be processed within minutes. Many alerts that are incorrectly placed on Vandalism in Progress are never dealt with, simply because they become old before an administrator gets to them. Thanks for your efforts. :) // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 16:36, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

My RFA

Hi!

I just stumbled upon your requests for administrators to block vandals; I'm not saying that is bad, but should that administrator be offline, blocking a vandal may take more time. For this, I advise you use the WP:AIV page; stick with that template, and since there are almost always 2-3 administrators around, it is much quicker justice. But again, you don't have to do this; just a recommendation. -M o P 00:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC) [reply]

  • P.S. You may want to make a subpage for your talk header; as it is, it seems to think that you are not User:Whopper, but instead a burger. Which you may be, but burgers can't type in my experience.

I have unblocked this user. Please help us keep an eye on the contributions from that IP for a while. Thanks. Joyous | Talk 00:39, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem

No problem, I thought it was vandalism; however, turns out the user was just curious. I'm also curious, why hand out a level 4 template on their first offence? No harm done, I hope, but in the future with such cases try using {{attack}}, subst'ed of course. M o P 04:47, 20 March 2006 (UTC) [reply]

I may add the Yellow Turban walkthrough and Lu Bu walkthough also. (Heh, may as well add the whole sha-bang-a-bang.) --Zhang Liao 23:54, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Would you mind terribly explaining what you plan to do? In future, you may want to do so before you do it. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Barnstars

A Barnstar!
Lots of Barnstars

Wow. I have recently met you on IRC, and you seem like a great person. I have looked at what all you have done, and you deserve so many barnstars. I'll do my best to do that here! So congrats at the six years, and hopefully to another six. Thank you for all your wiki contributions. Please do not be gone for too long!~Linuxerist E/L/T 02:30, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the barnstar as well! It will be here soon. I'm glad your stress is lowered, and happy editing! ~Linuxerist E/L/T 02:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Trading spaces

Hey Whopper, thanks for starting work on my userpage, it's looking good so far. Just a few things in response to your question to guide your completion:

  • I'd rather have my userboxes outside of one of those 'show' sections.
  • You can put the 'What I do on Wikipedia' and 'To-do' sections into one of those 'show/hide' things, as they are more for my reference.
  • I like the coloured Intro, Admin stuff, RFA, About, Contact boxes as you've done them :)
  • Maybe make the 'What I do on Wikipedia' section colour scheme the same as the 'About me' box, as the lighter shade is easier on the eye.
  • Oh and a final bit of vanity- now I've got my second barnstar could you create a new 'show/hide' section for 'Awards'?

Thank you again for your work, I look forward to seeing the final result! Cheers, Petros471 09:42, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks :) Much better than anything I'd have come up with! I'm going to have a go at tweaking it a bit, I'll let you know if I need any help. Cheers, Petros471 08:08, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You!

Have this star of HTML (that does not even compare to the quality of your designing;) for your excellent work on my user page. I love the new design! ~Linuxerist E/L/T 03:04, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Hello!

First, I'd like to say that I'm studying for exams these days, so please be patient if I take a while to respond. Anyway, I like my main page, but my subpages are looking pretty, well, ugly. I can't seem to find a good look for them. I would like to keep my main page, it could be modified, but I want it to look generally the same. Mainly, I was looking for a better look for my subpages, something clean, and not loud or cluttered. I got my inspiration for my main page looking at User:RexNL's page, and I like his subpage design. Maybe something like that, but with a little more colour? Anyway, thanks for accepting my rennovation request! --digital_me(Talk)(Contribs) 23:43, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit summary

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

Civility

Regarding this edit: please do not threaten other users. WP:AGF requires that we be respectful to other users regardless of their actions. --InShaneee 03:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless, that kind of language is not looked upon lightly. Please try to be more polite in the future. --InShaneee 19:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I hope for your speedy recovery and will be glad to see you back here. I shall pray to the Heavens that you are back to normal health.--Zhang Liao 19:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem...

@least for me, the "Please leave me a new message" thing on your usrpage doesn't work, instead it points to MY talk page and gives an HTML error. 68.39.174.238 05:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to work now, and it no longer pointed to my talk page. I have no idea what caused that. 68.39.174.238 05:49, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are supergreat so here is a supergreat mule for you

My RFA

Thank you for your recent vote on my RFA, regardless of how you voted. I appreciate all votes. I am going to wait until I have more edits in all namespaces. (And also improve answering impossible questions ;). Hopefully one day I will be more sucessful than it was looking, once I meet most user's voting standards. Periods in disambigs

Per WP:MOSDAB, disambig entries "do not include commas or periods at the end of the line". It's not a big deal, but it would be good to avoid someone coming along and removing the periods, and then you re-adding them, and later someone else removing them, etc. --Interiot 15:51, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all, people add commas/periods/semicolons all the time, somebody just has to remove them eventually. Thanks. --Interiot 18:08, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
